WHERE ARE YOU SEEING CHRIST HERE?
It should be more than obvious by now that the show is not going for a direct embodiment of biblical Christian mythology. I mean, the only time Christ himself has even been mentioned is in using the term "antichrist", which Cas even says is inappropriate. Some of the armageddon specifics are coming out of Revelations, but Paradise Lost and zoroastrianism and all sorts of other things are being used as references too.
They're using a range of sources to create their own mythology. The Abrahamic religions are the major ones within the society the show is made, so they're the ones that will have the most resonance. Also, it's a rich mythology to draw from, and provides a great oppurtunity for subversion.
The show is not Cristian (or Jewish or whatever else), and your Christian friends should not feel vindicated. SPN!God is a giant douchebag - even if he did step in in the end - the guy is the biggest in-verse arsehole there is, with some of his angels coming in close behind. Christianity does NOT come out of s5 looking good, if you choose to see real-world Christianity in there at all (which it ISN'T).

It occurs to me that this line doesn't express exactly what I mean but I can't think of a way to clarify and really have to get to work. IDEK. Our-world religions exist in the show only in the sense that we put them there, but the mythologies within the show are not our-world religions, even if they are based on them. Does that help? Ugh, whatever, working now.

IA with your post in general, but it's always confused me that there hasn't been more discussion in fandom (that I've seen) of the idea that Sam & Dean are filling the "Christ" spot in this re-interpretation of Christian mythology. I mean, they are Mary's children, John Winchester is kind of portrayed as a God-analogue, they have Gospels, they die and are reborn, they redeem humanity through their suffering.
IDK, just seems like a rich vein of possible interpretation?

And the best part is - it's not that it's one of them as Christ and the other as Antichrist, or one as Jesus and one as Jesus' brother Bob (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BancL3pXnAQ/), it's that the role is literally filled by both of them.
Basically, the whole series is an AU fanfic of the New Testament ;)
