Nothing Christian at all about wars between angels and demons. Nope.

Nothing at all.

Seriously though stop whining, ignore them, and have fun with your fandom. Jesus, you act like the Christians kicked your puppy and then spit in your Cheerios before driving away in a Hummer laughing about how they're destroying the environment or something.

The problem there would be how God stood around while a bunch of horrible shit happened to people. Not very faith-affirming.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2010-05-28 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I...don't think that's the point. At all. (And "Xian"? I keep hearing it in my head with Chinese pronunciation.) Didn't you see "Hammer of the Gods"? The whole point of that ep was that there are tons of religions and they're all 'real,' and humans are kinda stupid for being narrow-minded and acting like only one faith is 'right' and real. I really liked that idea. I don't know if we're supposed to think that Chuck was God all along--and I hope not, because I think that's stupid and unforgivably retconny--but I think you're missing the point of that reveal.

I think the real problem here isn't the show, but your friends being so horribly smug about it. What the hell.

A slightly unrelated question, what's with everybody talking about "their Christian friends"? I mean, there are so many secrets about someone having weird Christian friends who either love or hate Supernatural or don't approve of specific pairings *coughDean/Cascough*. Jesus, I went to a Catholic school, and religion was barely even mentioned outside of religious education. Is it an American thing? I really don't want to sound like one of those Europeans who are all, "lol, Americans", but I'm genuinely confused.

I'm not really sure how you've manufactured the jump from "a show with Christian themes" to "a Christian show". If it's the first that's surprising you then I am absolutely baffled considering that Supernatural has been pretty obvious about that fact in the first place; if it's the second, well, I think that's a massive jump. The show thus far has illustrated a rather uncaring god who seems to be more or less totally fine with human suffering. Even assuming that Chuck is god, which is in no way a given, there are still plenty of moral and ethical questions going into the equation.

I actually really liked the finale, and I'm an atheist. It didn't seem to ever go into the realm of "but your faith in god and everything will work out". Rather, the message seemed to be "work as hard as you possibly can so things don't go south, and then maybe things won't end entirely horribly".

What is with all the Xians? Why can't you just say Christians? It took me a while to figure out just WTF you were trying to say. lol

"Showed no signs"? Demons, angels, the apocalypse, God, Lucifer, Michael, prophets, the fact that Lucifer easily wiped out all the other Gods in 5.19... You're right, there's nothing Christian about that at all.

One of my online friends is a total atheist, but she loved the finale--because Christianity wasn't the point, the WINCHESTERS and their love for each other was! That and Free Will....

This is a story about humanity, not a Christian parable, I don't really understand your problem...the Chuck thing is mostly just a meta-in joke from Kripke, the show creator saying goodbye to his fans and his show as he steps down as showrunner...

[identity profile] xobscurexomenx.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe no one is "point[ing] out the obvious split" because there isn't one?

Just a thought.

(Also, "SPN showed no signs of being an Xian show until the finale"? Were you watching the same show I was, or did I somehow dream all of that?)

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Showed no signs of being Christian until the finale? Did you miss the whole Lucifer storyline? The angels etc.?

That said, what's so Christian about the finale? That God exists? That was a given. The idea that he wants Lucifer and Michael to battle each other and was testing Sam and Dean hoping they'd choose "family" over what appears to be their duty to God isn't a Christian ending at all. The duty of a good Christian in that situation would have been to happily agree to be Michael and Lucifer's vessels and bring on the glorious apocolypse and paradise on earth.

[identity profile] hells-hikari.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
First of all, Christian themes =/= Christian show.

Second, no signs? Did you miss the FOURTH episode in which they EXORCISED a DEMON? Hell, the very premise of the show, two brothers, one of which may or may not be favoured by the father, have conflicts, just screams Cain and Abel.

Third, as [livejournal.com profile] sistermagpie said, The duty of a good Christian in that situation would have been to happily agree to be Michael and Lucifer's vessels and bring on the glorious apocolypse and paradise on earth. I agree completely with that statement. But did the show implicate that this is what we should yearn for? Hell no. The angels that wanted the apocalypse were portrayed as evil assholes. Just take Zachariah. I loved him, but Christ, what a dick! Would a Christian show portray an angel (who is sometimes even considered an archangel, if you go by the theory that says that there are seven archangels) that way? Gleefully laughing when people die (because of angels), calling a soul in heaven a MILF and doing naughty things with her, giving people all sorts of nasty diseases? Not really. In contrast, the only angel that wanted to stop the apocalypse, was one of our heros:

Team Free Will. Which brings me to my fourth point.
I hope you're aware of it, OP; free will means much more than "screwing destiny" and not being "God's bitch". It means being able to choose your own path, but it also means taking responsibility for your actions, with no means of hiding behind some greater entity or being able to be redeemed by said greater entity. One can't justify his actions to someone else, but only to himself. And a lot of other things which Sartre and other philosophers can explain much more eloquently than me. Let's just say, in a nutshell, it's always free will vs. god.

And in the end, Team Free Will wins. It wasn't God who defeated Lucifer. It was Sam's choice to sacrifice himself, among other choices done by other people and angels. And now, Castiel, the angel, acts upon his free will when he decides to go back to heaven and be the new sheriff in town. He has no idea if this is what God wants, if God would approve, but he does it anyway. An angel acting on free will? Doesn't sound Christian to me.
And Dean? He fought for free will, he gets free will, including all the consequences. Which means being miserable. In a Christian show, Dean would propably have gotten an ending similiar to Job's.

So, to express it with simpler terms, free will > God's will, which is =/= Christianity. Hence, why so offended?

So, the big mystery behind the 56-year arc of SPNLOST was 'Don't fret, baby, God was watching all along and his plan played out.

Fixed that for you.

NO, I KID. But seriously, I keep having to check back to make sure this isn't actually a reaction to LOST. It just seems so...apropos.

[identity profile] sjazzmreow.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I... don't even have time to disagree with this properly (everyone else is covering that nicely anyway), but there is one thing I really don't get and am totally sick of seeing:

WHERE ARE YOU SEEING CHRIST HERE?

It should be more than obvious by now that the show is not going for a direct embodiment of biblical Christian mythology. I mean, the only time Christ himself has even been mentioned is in using the term "antichrist", which Cas even says is inappropriate. Some of the armageddon specifics are coming out of Revelations, but Paradise Lost and zoroastrianism and all sorts of other things are being used as references too.

They're using a range of sources to create their own mythology. The Abrahamic religions are the major ones within the society the show is made, so they're the ones that will have the most resonance. Also, it's a rich mythology to draw from, and provides a great oppurtunity for subversion.

The show is not Cristian (or Jewish or whatever else), and your Christian friends should not feel vindicated. SPN!God is a giant douchebag - even if he did step in in the end - the guy is the biggest in-verse arsehole there is, with some of his angels coming in close behind. Christianity does NOT come out of s5 looking good, if you choose to see real-world Christianity in there at all (which it ISN'T).

Unfriend all your "Xian" friends. PROBLEM SOLVED!

[identity profile] minalskare.livejournal.com 2010-05-29 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
This may seem like an obvious split because of your circle of friends but believe me, many people disliked or liked the finale and it had nothing to do with their religious views.
