I would have liked it better if it had been the other universe that Daniel had attempted to create. Mix up the science and the faith aspects so that there's a mixed possibility there. I am okay with the finale, but I feel really annoyed that I spent six or so seasons trying to figure stuff out in a logical manner especially the last season trying to figure out the parallel mirror universe and how things were different from the Island not being there just to find out it's all a hand wave.

[identity profile] 365reasonswhy.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I was okay with the finale, a tad disappointed that so many things were left hanging and that they took the easy way out, not to mention that whole last minute deus ex machina of Jacob/MIB/Evil!AllisonJanney, but on the whole I am okay with it because it satisfied my all of my shipper loves.

But people think it was a holy revelation? Really? Geez. That goes in the box with the people who think if you're unhappy at all with the finale you must not have understood it which doesn't follow at all.

[identity profile] myonlylight.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I half way agree with you here. I thought the finale was very emotionally satisfying, so overall I've chosen to be happy about how it ended. But it would have been even better if they'd followed their trend of trying to tie everything together logically.

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't know why they take one over the other when they'd been doing sort of both emotional/faith and logical/science the rest of the show. It was possible to set up both.

[identity profile] softly-me.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
This also annoyed me a lot.

[identity profile] kadabralin.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy crap I know right? I was very disappointed with the finale. :\

Also, what the heck happened to Miles? He sort of just disappeared, unless I missed something.

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Miles made it in the end. So theoretically he lived a long life having a bromance with Sawyer while Claire and Kate raised Aaron, Richard discovered the craziness of the modern world, and Lapetus developed a drinking problem.

[identity profile] sara-rojo.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
You just made it all awesome. Sicne I was also very disappointed, I will take your reality and substitute the show's with it ^^

you also made me realise what an awesome pairing Miles/Sawyer could be XD

"he lived a long life having a bromance with Sawyer while Claire and Kate raised Aaron"

IKR? My after finale canon has Kate and Claire going off to be Aaron's two mommies together and Sawyer and Miles reestablishing themselves as an awesome crime fighting duo.

"Richard discovered the craziness of the modern world"
I WOULD WATCH THE HELL OUT OF THAT SITCOM

Thing is, Richard already knows the craziness of the modern world. He has been going off Island for decades. Remember, he was there when Locke was born, showed up again to test Locke when he was a boy and was even around to recruit Juliet to see if she was worthy of the Island job.

God knows how many other times he has been off the Island running errands for the Others and Jacob.

IDGI. Why does it's being the afterlife mean it "isn't real"?

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's not "this could be the afterlife/could be an alternate dimension". It's "this is the afterlife" so it leaves out people that maybe don't believe in anything after death. It subsists solely as people in the faith category can latch onto the ending, rather than those who were in it for the sciencey aspects.

[identity profile] mynames-jess.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. This wonderfully explains what I took issue with about it.

[identity profile] oldstarnewshine.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but it's a fictional universe. The show isn't insisting that the sidwaysverse is how the afterlife works in the real world, or even that there is an afterlife in the real world. (And they also say that it's a place the main characters "created", so it might even be that that's not the way it works for the whole Lostverse, just Our Heroes.) It's just how it works on Lost; they're not trying to convert anyone.

Oh gosh, I was so disappointed with the finale too.

[identity profile] mynames-jess.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, anon; me too.

The characters realizing their on island lives was nice and all, but to realize that the whole sideways world was just dismissed by some silly pseudo religious explanation? No thank you. (I want pseudo sci-fi in my LOST! Not pseudo spiritual crap.)
All I could think was really? If they were just going to wave off the sideways world with something as lame as that, why couldn't they have just not bothered with creating it in the first place and used that time to better explain the myriad of island related questions, you know?

[identity profile] gossy16.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
What's interesting is, I remember an early Darlton podcast from this season where they refused to give a name to the sideways world because to simply call it "alternate universe" made it sound somewhat less valid than the current timeline.

I guess the point is, this is a story about characters. And whatever you want to believe the sideways world amount to, it was real to them. They lived it, it was relevant to them. Tbh, that's all I care about.

[identity profile] matitablu.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
maybe we should swap friends, anon. I liked the finale overall, and most of my friends hated it :(

I don't understand why I'm supposed to care about the "reunion" of a bunch of people who spent all the time I knew them going in different directions and only finding each other because they thought they were being forced to by destiny. Especially since it's not like they were even apart in the show (except when they were intentionally walking off in different directions).

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
aw, I kind of loved that the alt-world turned out to be essentially purgatory, cause FOR YEARS Lost fans have been asking if that's what the island was. I thought it was Damon and Carlton elbowing us and winking.

idk, I'm as atheistic as they come, but I don't mind religious themes in my fiction. and like half the fun of Lost (for me) has been sitting down after the episode finished and puzzling out the mysteries myself. Emotionally the finale seemed right, it really felt like an ending - there was a huge but still optimistic sense of finality to it, and I don't mind the loose ends cause now I get to theorize FOREVER! I totally understand that not everyone's going to agree, though, and you shouldn't have to hide your disappointment from your friends.

[identity profile] minalskare.livejournal.com 2010-06-10 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
Beautifully put!

[identity profile] minalskare.livejournal.com 2010-06-10 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
I wanted more out of the alt-world but ultimately I was pleased with the ending.
I'm sorry it didn't do it for you, OP. :\
