That's called plagiarism, you shouldn't sound so proud of yourself.

[identity profile] vardoeger.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
This is just disappointing.

[identity profile] atom-bunny.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow - I really hope you aren't in any of the fandoms I read for for...

Plagiarist.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-08 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, one half of me is going: Plagiarism, that's bad, you shouldn't do it and some people who plagiarize get justly punished.

The other half is saying: Who the hell cares? If you're not making money, if no one knows, if the readers are pleased with your work then what is the problem.

I ask you, Chicken Little, how exactly is the sky falling because of this?

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I know you didn't put a question mark after the "what is the problem" retort -- but I feel compelled to answer anyway :P

The problem, is that s/he will never evolve as a writer if s/he just relies on copying other people's writings. It also sucks for the real author (for obvious reasons), and for the readers -- if they enjoy the sex scene so much, chances are they'd like it a lot better in its original context.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-08 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's just the principle of it, y'know? A lot of people in fandom work hard at writing and posting fic, and sex scenes can be really difficult to execute with success; this kind of attitude just cheapens the effort of people who don't take the easy way out. Anyone can copy and paste or type out someone else's work, but it takes imagination and persistence to write something original. Even though it's only fic and it isn't going to be published, even though it isn't the end of the world as we know it, plaigarism is still offensive and disrespectful to the original author as well as readers and writers in fandom. Even if it's just a Harlequin romance.

I'm really hoping this person is a troll.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-08 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know why you sound so shocked. There's a quatrillion Harlequin romance novels out there and you're just lifting the sex scenes and filing off the serial numbers from a few of them and you're surprised that your readers to a) haven't read the same books you're lifting from and/or b) don't remember them enough to recognize them. You're not an evil genius pulling one over on fandom, sry2say.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Plagiarism issues aside, I'm surprised that you can mix Harlequin with fandom. The latter tends to favor graphic smut, and the Harlequin books I've read (which is a fair amount) were almost always rather tame. Granted I was into Harlequin in my early teens, so I'm sure there's a whole bunch of new lines now -- Harlequin Steamy instead of Harlequin Historical, perhaps! *laughs*

[identity profile] julia-here.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody notices because a lot of us have started just skipping the sex scenes except for the few rare writers who do them well.

it's funny because they're probably better than what most fanfic writers produce

Bwahahaha! Well done, anon!

Tsk, ya cheating cheater.

[identity profile] masterfedora.livejournal.com 2010-06-08 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It's funny cause I used to do this. Well I didn't post other people's work on the internet and call it my own cause it's plagiarism, but I did read smut scenes in romance novels and replace the names with het ships. XD

Oh and you suck.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-09 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Not surprising in the fucking least. Badfic sex scenes usually sound exactly cribbed from Harlequin novels to begin with. :|

your readers have shitty taste

(Anonymous) 2010-06-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Romance novels have the worst sex scenes in the world D:

[identity profile] nezbit.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
If you're going to plagiarize, do it from something good. Me and my friends have a hobby of finding the most poorly written smut in the romance section if we get bored in a book store.

Wouldn't it be sort of, uh, humiliating to get caught for that and sued, though? Being known in real life for writing smutty fanfiction would be embarrassing enough, but on top of that, I'm pretty sure most people would not be very sympathetic toward someone who stole paragraphs of tripe from bad romance novels.

...I used to do this back when I had no idea how to write a sex scene. But I did it for private RPs and stuff. Nothing that would ever be read by a major audience. And I felt bad about it then. If I were you, OP, the guilt would be killing me. Anyway, you'll probably find soon that you don't need to do it anymore. Copypastaing for long enough leaves you with some generic sex-writing skills, for sure.

[identity profile] ljismahname.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
You know I've often wondered when reading certain sex scenes in fics if the writer has lifted it from a romance novel so I'm pretty unsurprised by the fact that someone actually has. I don't know, whatever, obviously it's bad and you shouldn't do it but it is just fan fiction. The world isn't going to implode because you're doing it or anything; just kind of a slap in the face for the original author...
