You know, weird things can be triggers too. Things closely related to a traumatic incident in someone's mind to the point of being triggering can have nothing to do with triggery things for the majority of the population. That doesn't mean it's possible to know about those in a place like fandomsecrets, though. If I post a secret about Mickey Mouse and it triggers someone, it's not my fault, but I'm still sorry that I caused someone pain, if that makes sense.

But I agree, it's irritating when people don't even know what a trigger is. Squicks are an entirely different thing.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-28 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
More trigger wank ahoy.

(I'm with you, though, OP.)

(Anonymous) 2010-06-28 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of people don't understand what a trigger is. It's not something that makes you feel upset (or angry, or scared), when a person is strigger, they're reliving a traumatic experience from their past. Once the scary/sad/angry-making thing is taken away, so will your bad feelings, but someone who has been triggered might feel the fall-out for days.

Well, not only that, but secrets about suicide could be emotional triggers for people with depression, bipolar or other mental illnesses. For me, I never actually attempted suicide but watching someone commit suicide in a film can trigger deep depression in me for no particular reason, and if I could avoid something like that it would be helpful

That's why I have to be in the right frame of mind to watch certain movies or listen to some music

[identity profile] ferricent.livejournal.com 2010-06-28 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this.

BALLOONS

I have to go out the room whenever there's balloons on TV.

I cannot fucking stand mosquito hawks (crane flies).

I have this irrational fear of not being able to breathe. This extends into a fear of being in large crowds of people, drowning, and avalanches.

Dizziness. There was a time that hearing words that rhymed with "dizzy" could send me into a panic attack. I'll still walk backwards sometimes so that I don't turn around too much.

The only good part is that the technical name for my fear is dinophobia. That's pretty awesome.

Spontaneous combustion. For a while, I would try to calm myself down by sitting in the shower, but then I realized that it was my cells being incinerated so all the water in the world wouldn't help.

I wouldn't be that mean, but the whining does annoy me. Also, I can understand if someone has some kind of animal phobia because of a bad experience in childhood or a scary experience with a certain animal, but I don't get fear of spiders or snakes when people have no negative experiences with these animals. It makes me feel really bad because both spiders and snakes are really important to the environment and eat pests like flies, mosquitoes, rats, etc. They are good to have around (I actually think snakes are cute so IDK, maybe I'm biased). Such a small percentage of them are poisonous and as long as you can recognize and avoid the poisonous variety they are no more harmful than other animals

I think most people know that spiders are one of the most common phobias, it's not so obscure that you don't expect anyone to dislike a picture.

Other than that, I agree with you.

Lol, reCAPTCHA's kind of old-fashioned. "Little strop", yeah, pretty much.

True story

[identity profile] asimaiyat.livejournal.com 2010-06-29 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
I started a thread on another forum I post on suggesting that people use trigger warnings when they're going to post about rape or something.

Within like a week, this really depressed lonely guy posted a thread about how people should use [trigger warning] on threads about happy relationships, because they trigger him.

I was like asfdsjkgfsj.

I don't consider arachnophobia an obscure phobia, and it's kind of ridiculous when people don't take bad cases seriously. It's not funny, as someone with serious arachnophobia, to see a big giant spider on the screen. We're already thinking spiders are around us, why would we want it in our face?

[identity profile] ayeayes.livejournal.com 2010-06-30 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I never really understood the spider phobia. I think they're adorable!
