Yeah, me too. Kinda. I mean, people can like Hetalia for all I care, I just find it weird when they like a country based on a character who consists of untrue, outdated clichés and prejudices. And is also supposedly a nazi. (Or is he? I don't know too much about Hetalia...)

No, he isn't, except in the WWII parts, I suppose. (Hetalia is not only about WWII, it has strips from pretty much every age from medieval times or earlier to modern days. And even the WWII strips deal mostly with anecdotes and whatnot instead of main events.)

And eh... one of my friends started taking an interest in ancient China because he was really into Fushigi Yuugi. Now he speaks Chinese, has been to China numerous times, teaches history of Chinese science(? something like that) at university, goes to conferences, is doing a phd, etc. Just because about ten years ago he thought "hey, this chick in this manga is hot, I want to find out more about her." I myself ended up majoring in Medieval English history & lit (and not something else related to England) because of a movie I saw when I was small. I'm not saying which, it's too embarrassing (it's not a very good movie).

Maybe the OP is not going to end up a scholar of something Germany-related just because they like the funny Germany character in a silly manga, but still, I don't think it's fair to judge them . :/

There are tons of neutrals and non-Germans (like myself) who went all flail-happy about the German team! They're really a set of classy, happy, talented players (current captain wank aside) who play for team and country before themselves.

...Admittedly, they're also quite good looking and make their own slash fuel, but that's completely separate. XD

I'm the same way. I like NTs based on the way they play, regardless of what country they're from (though I've noticed that if I really like a country's NT it makes me take a greater interest in that nation -- I was like that with Argentina in 2006 since they were my favorite team to watch in that World Cup).

In general I feel like Germany had the best team cohesiveness -- the players worked well together and seemed to have a good relationship with their coach, which is probably one of the reasons they performed as well as they did. Of course, all of these guys play in Germany for Bundesliga teams (except for Boateng) so they play with and against each other pretty frequently

i am Spanish. Most of us were deeply impressed and admired by Germany's class during and after the game. Their outstanding sportsmanship made Spaniards cheer for Germany against Uruguay, something strange in itself since we're culturally closer to Uruguay and we have close ties to them, they're an ex-colony of ours and all that, plus not many people here are happy with Germany right now, for political reasons. They were the only team that played with class and good football against Spain, the only ones that didn't fall back and close on defense making lots of fouls, that's why their match was the cleanest and most beautiful of the entire tournament. We also love Paul and have offered Spanish citizenship to himXD
I truly think they were the best team at the World Cup, better than Spain. They had just The one bad match, against Spain, but overall they were superior

I'm also a Hetalia fan ^^
But my football fangirling started after we won the EurochampionsXD
