Because it's SO hard being pretty and well-liked.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
being attractive doesn't immediately make you well liked. jfc. pretty people can have loser personalities, just like you.

[identity profile] dementria.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't say anything about being "well-liked", just attractive. Being pretty doesn't make people like you. Especially if you have social anxiety disorders and just want to be a hermit.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Stop acting like you have real problems, privileged twat.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL BECAUSE ATTRACTIVE = WHITE?

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
No dog in this fight, but "privileged" doesn't refer to just race. It's any instance where one group is privileged over another, e.g. attractive people over ugly people.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2010-07-19 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
"privileged" doesn't refer to just race

No, but it IS overused these days, outside of where it should be reserved for discussions of how privilege actually robs an entire other group of people of necessary things such as jobs, education, and financial benefits.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck off jackass. If your mother knew what a terrible person she brought into the world, who gets his kicks from calling people "twats" and pretending that their very real problems aren't real, she'd be ashamed that she brought you into the world.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
You're making me ashamed of being an uggo. Now go sit in the uggo corner and stay there until you can act civil around other people.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I was pretty when I was younger, and now I'm pretty homely, so I am like Tiresias here, and I say you speak the truth.

This comment is the best comment.

I'm pretty with suicidal depression. Wanna trade?

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm unattractive with the same problem. Having everyone tell me how pretty I am all the time and having a cute, loving boyfriend would definitely up my will to live. So yes let's trade.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
lol what dream world do you live in? just because someone is attractive doesn't mean people go 'omg you are soooooo pretty!!11!' all the time, and how would you get that cute, loving boyfriend when you can't even get out of bed because of your depression? and since you'd still be the same fucking person inside I hardly think your suicidal thoughts would lessen to any degree.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Why are you assuming that being pretty = being constantly told you're pretty and automatically getting a great boyfriend? It really does not happen that way.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it wouldn't. While I wouldn't describe myself as pretty, I tried to commit suicide when I was in a happy, loving relationship. Depression is a neurochemical illness, not a result of being ugly and unappreciated.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
so being objectified makes you happy.

God, now I just feel sad for you.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
because being invisible and ignored your whole life is so much better amirite

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Let me level with you. (New anon here.)

Looks don't make a difference if you have high self-esteem. There are beautiful women out there in shitty relationships because they don't value themselves and they're asshole-bait.

You can be not conventionally pretty, and overweight, and have a great life, excellent romantic relationships, etc.

Cultivate your personality. Be someone people want to be with. You don't have to be a beauty to look YOUR best. Value yourself and other people will too.

I'm plain, and I have NEVER been invisible. And I know that the friends and boyfriends and now husband I have don't just like me for my looks, either. I wouldn't trade that for being beautiful. Ever.

I've met pretty girls whose boyfriends and husbands beat the shit out of them. A fellow's not going to save you (whether you too are a girl, or a guy).

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
Being pretty doesn't equal having a cute, loving boyfriend.

Pretty women can be in abusive relationships, or be single, or not even attracted to men.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Unattractive, overweight and having the same problem. So sure, I'll swap. You can take the staring from random strangers, the feeling of shame going make-up or clothes shopping or eating in public and the complete lack of anyone who looks remotely like you in magazines or on TV unless it's just a marker of society explicitely telling you to change.

The amount of BAW in this thread is kind of rage-enducing. As if the ~pretty~ people don't have any kind of built in advantage over everyone else because guess what? You goddamn well do.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon, come on. When I was a teenager I was morbidly obese with severe acne and a bad limp to boot. Please do not tell me I don't understand the shame. Am I lucky I was able to resolve a lot my problems, yes. Are there some advantages, there are. But it wasn't this great magical transformation I had always hoped it would be.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2010-07-19 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Not to start a fight with you, but I weigh over 300 pounds, have plenty of gray in my hair, am approaching 40, single, am not rich - and I'm going to tell you, the skinny, pretty girls are not responsible for your unhappiness. Hating them isn't going to fix your self-image problems. I watched my mother do the same thing for far too many years, and I kept wanting to just slap her and tell her to snap out of it and focus on doing something that made her feel good about who she was. (In a good way. I didn't want to HIT my mother.)

[identity profile] kiran59.livejournal.com 2010-07-19 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Because being pretty is a magical bubble that shields you from societies ills. Pretty people dont have loved ones die. Pretty people dont get raped or hurt. Pretty people dont get diseases.

We are all people. We all have pain. To assume that looks prevent that is about as naive and foolish as saying money is the cure to all society's ills.

Maybe try not to be so bitter.
