OP, keep doing what you are doing. The internet is a just a giant receptacle for wank. Hang out in fandom for the lulz and the good times, but sign off when people start jizzing morality at you. And keep making a difference irl, because that is what matters in life, not cowering behind a computer screen. No, everybody doesn't have the courage to stand up for themselves, but they should make an effort to get back on their feet and better themselves IRL. I wasn't sure at first what to think of this secret. I was like, well, good for you (although do you really think anyone you talk to in a BAR gives a shit? god, I've never been in a bar where you can even have a conversation that isn't SHOUTING), but there's plenty of reasons why some people might not be involved in activism offline.

Are they all good reasons? I don't know. I used to be involved in various groups, did similar kinds of public speaking, etc., but in the past few years it seems like I don't have a reliable block of free time. I'm too busy trying to scrape up the money around school to be able to afford each next semester. One of the groups I became involved with when I was 13 only meets on days I work. Is that a good enough reason to have put offline activism on the back burner? I'm honestly not sure. I go back and forth on that one, but I don't think I have the same energy to spare for it.

(Oh, and fuck Amnesty International for harassing post-secondary students for monetary donations. I just wanted to get that off my chest.)


BUT THEN I realized that I'd missed that first, "I'm a troll," line of your secret. Are you serious? You're an "activist" in your offline life, and then you go home and undermine it by upsetting as many people as you can online? Do you even realize how fucking hypocritical that is?

At one point in my life, when I was just coming out, I ended up in a lot of online debates about GLBT issues. I shouldn't have, because it was very detrimental to my emotional health at the time, and I didn't have the mental armor to deal with other people's transphobia that I later grew to have. But I did it because I was drawn like a moth to discussions about trans identity - I had no one in real life to talk with about it.

The fact that some people have said that they consider f!s one of the only places they can discuss an issue and this prompts you to sneer at and troll them is completely gross. How do YOU know what their reasons are for that?

I don't really think you either care about or understand the issues you're supposedly so interested in. If you did, your behaviour would be consistent enough to reflect that. Instead, you look like a self-righteous asshole who's only concerned with social justice when other people can SEE you do it.

Also, lol to your implicit suggestion that online debate doesn't matter. Some of the issues I care about now I ONLY became interested in through online debates just like the ones on f!s when I was a teenager. I know other people have had that experience.
