No. It's because it's a good movie.
For fuck's sake.

[identity profile] homestar.livejournal.com 2010-08-20 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Agree 100%. That movie is mediocre at best.

[identity profile] katamanda.livejournal.com 2010-08-20 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure Heath's death gave Dark Knight extra publicity and attention but I don't think it was the driving force of the films success. To most people it's a great film, pure and simple.

I think his death helped, but there was a huge buzz before he died about that film, so I disagree that the success of Dark Knight was solely due to Heath's death.

tl;dr I disagree with your reasoning. Good films make it on their own merits.

I don't understand why it's so hard for people to accept the fact that a lot of people just genuinely enjoyed this movie, myself included. TBH I didn't give a shit about Heath Ledger (well, it's sad when anyone dies, but I was never that interested in him and the only other movies I saw with him in it were The Patriot and Brokeback Mountain, neither of which were very good movies, so he hardly had anything to do with my decision to see the movie). And I was way more into Harvey Dent than the Joker anyway (though I think Ledger made a good Joker, I guess it helps that I don't think there has to be ONE STANDARD WAY to portray a character, especially a comic book villain that's been reimagined countless times before).

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2010-08-20 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, it's not like a ton of people didn't say and think that right after the film came out. Honestly, even if it were true, so what? A lot of people enjoyed it. A lot of people didn't. How is that different from just about every blockbuster film ever made?

[identity profile] eleusis-walks.livejournal.com 2010-08-20 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It definitely helped, though any Batman movie was going to do well at the box office after Begins. The movie was a pacing nightmare and Ledger was nothing special in it imo. Great actor, hardly a great performance.

[identity profile] greatbriton.livejournal.com 2010-08-20 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I wholeheartedly disagree.

[identity profile] quinnzel.livejournal.com 2010-08-20 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
If this were true, I believe Doctor Parnassus would have done a lot better than it did. Ya know. Considering it was his last movie and all. He wasn't a mega-superstar and I doubt most people even really cared when he died. He was a huge part of why the movie was so successful, but it's not because he passed away, it's because his acting was fucking glorious and people spread the word about it.

I thought everyone knew that.

It was a damn good movie and still would've performed strongly, don't get me wrong. But the record-breaking, earth-shattering cume was largely due to the immense buzz around his performance, which in turn came from his death.

Let's be honest: Great movie, yes, but it's not 12 TIMES BETTER THAN BATMAN BEGINS by any stretch, and yet... there's the box office... yup. Death sold that shit.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-20 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. And I hate that you can't say it without the hive mind killing you. The Dark Knight was, quite honestly, an alright superhero film. Heath Ledger's performance in it was interesting, but inconsistent; Christian Bale's BatVoice makes me want to punch walls; Gary Oldman is the best thing in it (closely followed by Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman). Without Ledger's death, it would have been just another Batman film, and his performance is not Oscar-worthy - the Oscar was awarded for his life and career (and probably for Brokeback).

Honestly I just thought it was a good movie, death or no death. Heath Ledger's fate didn't cross my mind while I watched it because I was too wrapped up in the plot and characters in front of me.

[identity profile] caelith.livejournal.com 2010-08-20 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Duh.

Still a damn good movie.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-20 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
While I don't think the movie was such a huge success because of Heath's death (it was just a really well done movie) I honestly believe when he was still alive he wouldn't have been given the Oscar.
There was so much rumour about "how the role of the joker consumed him" and such shit and it was like the academy just wanted to do something nice for his family and fans.

His performance was good, but not worthy of an Oscar. Just my two cents.

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2010-08-20 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't like it much but I don't think his death made that much of a difference. It seems like there was enough buzz about his performance beforehand that it didn't change much.

[identity profile] goodgollygopher.livejournal.com 2010-08-20 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, it might have been a factor, but I doubt that's the whole reason. It's a good movie. The end.

If it was so successful and loved just because of Heath's death, then why wasn't it the same for the Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus? A lot of people quite openly say they hate that movie, it's not that good, etc, whatever. Granted, the Dark Knight had a hell of a lot more publicity and money to work with than the Imaginarium did, but if tDK's glowing reviews were only because Heath died, then where are those glowing reviews for the Imaginarium?

While I definitely admit that it helped promote the film (however morbidly), it's still a solid action flick. It's a damn good movie, and it deserved its success just for being that. Now, ask me if I think Ledger deserved the Oscar for that role, and that's a whole other bag of popcorn...

(Anonymous) 2010-08-20 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well yes.....

Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie. But it wasn't THE BEST MOVIE EVEROMG! But it got released right after his death, so there you go.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-20 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The Dark Knight was a good movie and Heath Ledger gave a really stellar performance. It would have still been a highly-regarded, critically-acclaimed box-office hit without Heath Ledger's death. Critics and movie fans would be enthusiastic specifically about Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker as well. I will agree that Heath Ledger's death added some publicity and hype, and I doubt he would have won the Oscar if he had been alive, but I still think that The Dark Knight would have been the top grossing film of 2008 and would have been well received.

[identity profile] xshotofclarityx.livejournal.com 2010-08-20 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
How utterly unoriginal.

[identity profile] templarwolf.livejournal.com 2010-08-20 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It still would've raked in the cash, but more people would be willing to agree that it was pretty 'meh' overall, and not as good as the first in the reboot. Chopping the whole Hong Kong bit would've gone a long way towards making it a good movie. It would've shorted the run time about 40 minutes, and its a plot line that gets dropped about halfway through, anyway.

Oh, and using that sonar in the fight was retarded. You already know he's in your vicinity. Take off the damned goggles and fight, Bat-tard.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-21 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Probably not, but I think the postumous oscar was completely a sympathy nod.
