I actually quite enjoy True Blood (whilst not ignoring its flaws), and I've never read the books (I figured that if I was bored 150 pages into the first one, it wasn't going to snag me), but the more the show goes on I'm like, "guys--no really, c'mon. It's better, campier and more adult. But it's fucking Twilight."

Yes, on top of vampires, shapeshifters, werewolves, werepanthers, weretigers, weremotherfuckingbunnyrabbits, there are, unsurprisingly, ridiculous plotlines started about fairy lineage, and that the source of Sookie's unrelenting fuckability to the supernatural world is her deliciously attractive magic blood. I should totally accept that at face value, because you're right, it is no way any more bullshit than the rest of the story! Thanks for showing me the light. I disagree that the Sookie Stackhouse novels are better written. They're both written horribly, just in different ways.

TBH, I think the Sookie Stackhouse series is just as bad as Twilight; it's the adult version. But I prefer her storyline because it features character who aren't teenagers. But it's a guilty pleasure, nonetheless.

Edward is often hungry. For my blood.", so I think I'm more critical of it in comparison.

But yeah, the only real difference is the age bracket they involve and appeal to.

I read all (but the last) of them, and I certainly can't fault a guilty pleasure, but it is not highbrow literature here.

I would swear to G-d there is an actual passage somewhere in there about making Jacob a sandwich, only she doesn't know what kind he wants because he's doing something else/is late? So she spends like, ten minutes thinking long and hard about sandwiches, and then realizes she has to go somewhere and promptly forgets about them, which is a irritating because I CANNOT. The inside of Bella Swan's mind is a dark, twisting place.

It's entirely possible I hallucinated it, but it sums up so nicely everything that is wrong with SMeyer's writing style.

Truer words were never spoke. |D Though, really, the fact that it's 'the adult' version of Twilight does make it superior to Twilight in that respect--that is, it's not aimed at impressionable teen girls, nor is it (I'm guessing here) in denial about what it is. I've never read the Sookie Stackhouse books nor have I seen much of True Blood, but it seems pretty aware that it's self-indulgent sexy vampire funtimes and not meant to be taken seriously. "We're all adults here; it's OK to fantasize about being magically attractive to sexually aggressive vampires with accents, etc. Go nuts."

Exactly. I mean, enjoy it but don't for one second deny what it is. That's what bothers me about Twilight. If the general audience was mature enough to criticize the relationship and characters rather than just accepting it at face value ("but he's trying to protect her!!!"), I'd be a lot more comfortable. Heck, if the author didn't feel the need to be a worse apologist than her fans!
