To be fair, the first part of this comic is boring as all hell. It took me about three tries to even get to the part where Rose is introduced, and this is from someone who read all of Problem Sleuth and now sperges over Homestuck just as much as the next guy.

Maybe try looking at the start of the troll arc (Hivebent) where the art changes pretty dramatically and there is much more relationship/talky stuff going on than the dumb video-gamey sylladex shenanigans? A lot of people seem to hate the relationship aspects (especially the silly romance stuff) but I'm a DUMB GIRL and I enjoy it.

The reason people like it is because it is insanely complex and has so many callbacks, memes-in-the-making, foreshadowing etc that it makes the author look smart for remembering all this stuff, and makes you feel smart when you recognise a callback, and manages to make damn good characters that deviate from the usual terrible anime webcomic characters that are all too prevalent.

HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS INFORMATIVE ESSAY, OP

A friend who does read it says the author basically writes it using fan suggestions and pretty much wings it as he goes.

Also, I hate relationship/talky stuff so, uh, probably not a selling point for me.

Ah he does use fan suggestions but not in such a way that would be obvious, unless you also read the forums borderline-obsessively. As for winging it, I guess he does wing it panel-to-panel, but overall I'd say he knows where the story is going.

That's ok! I usually do too but it's a little different from normal relationship stuff. I enjoy verbal humour a lot too but if this stuff ain't your thing then Homestuck probably ain't either.

That was more the case with its predecessor, Problem Sleuth, and also for the earlier pages. Too many readers to do that now, though, so the official suggestion box only opens up for naming characters (for anywhere between 3 and 20 minutes). The plot's a lot more cohesive now.

Really, Act One is the major failing of this comic, and probably the major reason why so many people come away with the "it's boring" impression. The buildup at the beginning really is that dull, and even hardcore fans acknowledge this!

But the payoff, for me anyway, for sticking with it until Act Two and beyond was so worth it. But it's hardly a strike against anyone who can't get past the beginning-- that's a legitimate reason not to be able to get into it.

I DEFINITELY DO NOT recommend skipping to the beginning of Hivebent, though. For the love of GOD do not do this. It may seem like it's a fresh start, but the truth of the matter is, it's still built on the foundation of all four preceding acts, such that very little exposition is required for the "new" story (really it's just a convergent story that will be merged into the "prime" story). Anyone new to the comic who attempts to start there will just get the hell confused out of them.

Ah I definitely don't mean skipping straight to Hivebent and reading that! You're right, it would be incredibly weird and confusing. Just taking a look at it to see the hero mode art and more 'weird' environments and happenings. I know I only started reading because I was interested in these weird troll characters that I had no idea were even in the comic.

Homestuck is definitely something you gotta force your way through masochistically before you start to like it though.

My recommendation for newer readers is to gloss over Act 1's dialogue. Between sylladex follies, Sburb, and characters that have not been introduced, there's a lot of information to process. It's off putting, understandably. Only after reading all of the other acts do I realize that Act 1's just as funny. Understanding HS's world goes a long way, I think.

Not the OP

IT WAS INFORMATIVE, THANK YOU VERY MUCH

I've tried starting into this web series twice, only to come away bored and annoyed. But I'm still left thinking that I just haven't gotten to the good stuff yet. Maybe I'll slog through the beginning to see what all the fuss is about eventually. I am pretty dang curious.

The art style is charming in its simple, kind-of-crude-on-purpose way.
