I just want to bring up that for some reason, people think that female characters need traditionally "masculine" characteristics in order to be considered a strong woman. I know, I know, I get sick of the "healer/white mage love interest" a lot because of the frequency with which it comes up, but just because a character is that, doesn't make them worthless or weak.
And in my opinion, male characters aren't written better than female characters. They too have their stereotypical traits, can be generic, and downright boring. People just forgive them for it because they have penises and are "hot." As an example you used, I think Sakura from Naruto is actually interesting and strong, whereas, characters like Itachi and the rest of the thousands of Kishimoto's prettyboys that stand around and go "...:|" are boring as hell and have no originality put into them whatsoever.
Boss is fucking awesome, though.

I do agree that female characters get shafted a lot, but... to have problems with being a female because of this? It's such a weirdly twisted concept, a la "the media is misogynistic, and because of this, I am going to develop a misogynistic streak." There is a self-loathing there that makes me kind of uncomfortable.
Self-loathing is so 2006, guys.

Sakura is one of the characters that's grown the most in the entire series, and so what if she sometimes cries and pines after her gay pirate lover, she's still emotionally (and physically!) tough.
And thanks |D
