For the record, I have plenty of favorite female and male characters, and I don't think every female character ever, with the exception of a SHINING FEW, is the devil and automatically useless for falling into a female stereotype. The guys tend to fall into the "LOL FEARLESS FIGHTER OUT TO SAVE THE DAY, GET THE GIRL, AND RESOLVE A FEW PERSONAL ISSUES TO GIVE THE GAME/ANIME/SHOW A MORAL LESSON" stereotype too.
Admittedly, this has made me spiteful to male characters, and I admit to hating half of them simply because they're the male lead and therefore will be the same either depressingly emo 14-18 year old or the stupidly optimistic 14-18 year old, But even so, I have plenty of male characters I adore, not because they're male, but because they were written well and actually undergo development and growth! (Luke fon Fabre! ♥ Best. protagonist. ever.) The same with my girls, I want them to undergo development and growth (Naminé!), or they suck, no matter what the gender is.
DX Just makes me sad to see that the female characters always get the wrath of the fans for bad writing when the males aren't even all that better, they just happen to look good with another male character. Bleh.
