Maybe if they didn't present it as fanart, it would be easier to take as a piece of art. I think people tend to judge art and fanart differently after all. In fanart, you try to portray a character with a given set of characteristics. If you can't portray those identifying characteristics in the piece, it has failed as fanart.

Had they said, "This is my attempt at abstract realism." I'm sure that would have worked out better. It's not the most polished piece, but I could see it hanging in a little gallery somewhere. As pointed out in previous comments, it definitely has a folk-art feel to it. Since the artist said "Here is fanart" it wasn't as well received, which is quite a shame.

I've seen this person's art once or twice, and I'm pretty sure they said somewhere that they were experimenting with a different abstract style.

I suppose some people don't like fanarts unless they're Photoshopped to the teeth with highlights and sparkles.

WORD! If it ain't gonna look like who its supposed to look like, just fuckin quit! Say it's original or somethin! I feel the same way about OOC fics. Stop pretending its a fanfic and admit its really your biggest wetdream come true with original characters.
