"In fanart, you try to portray a character with a given set of characteristics. If you can't portray those identifying characteristics in the piece, it has failed as fanart."

I think that about sums up my opinion. Yes, they put a lot of work into their piece. Yes, their style is not the typical pretty boy look or whatever is popular now. Yes, as a stand alone piece, it is not that bad, but if the identifying bits of the character you're trying to draw are absent, that fanart just isn't fanart. It's still art, but it's not fanart.
