The "I haven't seen X play straight convincingly" argument is so incredibly offensive that I just don't get how you can say that after railing against homophobia in the first part of your secret.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-11 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not offensive to say about one particular person that he or she has no chemistry with women.

Tom Cruise has chemistry with no one.

This. If the first part of the secret wasn't problematic enough.

:/ Yeah, that phrase makes me rather uncomfortable.

[identity profile] asimaiyat.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed so hard. You can't "act straight" any more than you can, IDK, "act Jewish."

This! I'm so tired of his so called fans saying shit like that one.

+1

MTE

Essentially you're saying you think he's a shitty actor if you don't believe him as straight when he's playing that role. Unless you're not actually one of his fans, OP.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-11 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, some of his fans strike me as homophobic, too. :/ I have read comments that come close to saying that saying that Zach is gay means insulting him, or accusing him of something bad. Regardless of his sexual orentation, he supports gay rights, so he wouldn't approve of the idea that being gay is somehow shameful.

Now you are making me wonder what they think of Angels in America. Or Zach's past role in So NoTorious for that matter.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-11 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Not wanting to out him =/= being homophobic. If he is gay, he hasn't made it public, and it's no one else's place to do so. I don't know why this wouldn't make sense to you or why you would think that respecting his privacy is homophobic.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-11 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Some LJ user saying he's gay =/= outing him

[identity profile] seesnapefly.livejournal.com 2010-09-13 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
mte

saying he's gay isn't really "outing him" per say, but I think it's best to just respect the fact that he hasn't chosen to talk about his sexual preferences publicly.

[identity profile] futurama-stan.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought he played straight convincingly both as Sylar with Elle and Spock with Uhura (you're free to think differently, all I'm saying is that I had no idea he was gay until I became interested in him and read it on ONTD).

What do you mean acknowledge his sexuality? How can you acknowledge his sexuality if he himself doesn't? In all his public interactions, he acts as if he was asexual. Never mentions his romantic/sex life, never gets asked about it. He wants his glass closet, let him have it.

It'll certainly be interesting to see how handles the issue in the next couple of months when he's doing the Gay Fantasia on National Themes. His decision to do the play says nothing about his sexuality per se, however, combined with the "gay, but don't mention it" label, it seems like he might be inching toward stopping to lie by omission (ie. finally coming out).

(Anonymous) 2010-09-11 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
IA with you until...

""I haven't seen X play straight convincingly"

And you're accusing other people of gross homophobia?

I believed Spock/Uhura, and I really believed Sylar/Elle.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-12 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
I was with you until "I really believed Sylar/Elle".

LOL Oh, you.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-12 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely agree that I was really surprised to hear that there were fans of his who don't believe he's gay and get angry when other people talk about it, but only because he pinged my gaydar (which has a 97% accuracy rate) so unbelievably strongly in the Star Trek gag reel that I thought it was pretty much an unspoken fact at this point.

I mean it certainly doesn't matter either way, and I wouldn't get involved in discussions about it or try to like, out him for no reason, and the "HE CAN'T PLAY STRAIGHT!" argument is totally fucking lame (and incorrect), OP, but...

bro is gay.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-12 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of his fans remind me of Claymates. Good times.

[identity profile] fire-at-wi11.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
I think the fact that his 'fans' want him to be gay so much is just really unsettling. I mean ...I wouldn't care if was gay. That would be great! It would also be great if he was straight or bi or asexual or what-the-hell-ever but I do NOT understand why all of these random people on the internet seem to know he's gay with no real proof whatsoever. Just because you want him to fuck Chris Pine doesn't mean he's actually gay. Gah, tinhatters ...

(Anonymous) 2010-09-12 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-12 08:54 am (UTC)(link)
See, the idea that one can assume and say that he is straight without having to cite evidence, but one cannot assume and say he is gay without actual proof*, that seems a little unsettling, too.

Just becaue you want him to fuck Kristen Bell doesn't mean he's actually straight.

Please let's not act as if all the "He's not gay, wah, how dare you accuse him of this!!" people are in it for morally supeiour reasons. It was the ZQ/KBell shippers who wrote fics about Zach going "Eww, I'm not gay, I don't know why people think so D: D: D:"

*) And I remember a girl who was denying that Matt Bomer could possibly be gay. No "proof" was sufficient. He's saying in interviews that the network does not allow him to discuss hs personal life? No proof! Photos of him kissing a guy? No proof at all, he's still straight as an error, lalala.

Come on. Gay is normal. Some people are gay. Acknowledging this is not homophobic, it's kind of the opposite.

People have been saying he is gay LONG before Chris Pine came into the picture. If you don't care if he is gay, why are you trying to convince yourself that everyone who thinks Zach is gay are just Pinto tinhatters and not real fans? And it UNSETTLES you?

(Anonymous) 2010-09-12 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I want him to turn out to be straight just because random people on the internets are SO SURE OMG that he's gay.

Not a fan of his, don't care, but yeah. I hate when people think they can tell what someone's orientation is from their behaviour/fashion choices/whatever else that isn't actually their saying "yes, I am x".

[identity profile] dark-kaomi.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless he has specifically stated his sexual orientation (which I have no idea as I don't really care) then I'm not going to believe he is or is not gay. It just doesn't matter. He's an actor who I like and his sexual orientation has nothing to do with that.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-12 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I can understand and sympathize with people who say "Man, [ACTOR] is so awesome, I hope he's gay like I am because that would make me feel better about being gay" (and frankly, I can understand and sympathize with people who hope he's heterosexual for the same reasons.) I can understand (though I'm less sympathetic to) people who say "I would really be pleased if it turned out he was gay/straight because that fuels some pretty hot fantasies I have about him and [OTHER]."

But what I can't understand is people who somehow manage to convince themselves that they know whether someone's gay or straight based on no evidence -- or only evidence of the quality of "he never plays straight convincingly!", which is pretty much no evidence. The guy is an actor. It is his career to portray things he is not. He is good enough at doing it to have won roles in network television programs and in major motion pictures. The person who says "Oh, I can see through what he portrays on the screen, right through to his real sexual orientation!" is to be believed about as much as the armchair strategist who claims "Man, this coach is doing everything wrong! If it was me in there, I'd be leading the team to victory!"

OP, you are suffering from what is called the Kuleshov Effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuleshov_Effect). A filmmaker named Kuleshov showed audiences the image of an actor's face, intercut with images of a bowl of soup, a beautiful girl, or a child's coffin. The audiences praised the actor's ability to convincingly portray hunger (for the soup), lust (for the girl), or grief (over the dead child). But in fact, the footage of the actor was exactly the same in all three cases. It was context in the mind of the viewer that caused them to conclude, "he is portraying hunger/lust/grief."

In just the same way, you look at Quinto's acting and you say "He is showing me a man that's completely gay even when he's diagetically supposed to be heterosexual (and therefore the actor must be absolutely 110% gay)." You ignore the fact that your existing belief that Quinto is so gay that he can't portray straight convincingly is going to keep you from seeing him portray straight convincingly. If the audiences had been convinced that Ivan Mozzhukhin was "110% gay" before they were shown his image intercut with that of the beautiful girl, probably many of them would have said "oh, man, I know he's supposed to be portraying lust for that girl, but he's not convincing at all!"
