Seriously, I think Rocky Horror leads people the wrong way. I love it, but damn if that one fucking song doesn't make a mess out of a fairly simple difference.

Transvestites and transsexuals (more commonly called transgendered or trans) usually have different ideas of gender identification. Transvestites, such as comedian Eddie Izzard, do not usually exhibit any discomfort with their biologically determined sex. Transvestite men want to be men; transvestite women want to be women. Many transvestites choose to adopt habits of dress or appearance of the opposite gender, while retaining all physical characteristics of their sex.

In contrast, transsexuals believe that they should be or are truly the opposite sex. A transsexual may take action to make chemical or anatomical alterations to their bodies, in order to be more similar to their desired sex.

And sexual orientation has nothing to do with either of them. It's a separate thing.

Some trans people would disagree, insisting they don't 'want' or 'choose' to be the opposite sex. They have always been their 'preferred' sex; it was doctors parents and community who assigned them the wrong sex at birth and coercively enforced gender expectations upon that.

are you referring to intersexuals? because I'm fairly sure they aren't considered technically "trans," even if they have GID.

if you're not, then what are you referring to, out of curiosity?

that would make sense if anon said doctors, parents, etc forced gender upon them at birth, not sex. I mean, unless there's another group of people who get cut up as infants.

I fail to see how the text you quoted contradicts what you said. The words "want" and "choose" are completely absent. In fact, I think that the thought you are trying to express is exactly expressed within the quote with "they should be or are truly the opposite sex," specifically the "or are truly the opposite sex" part. Perhaps you are protesting the word "believe?" I "believe" there is no god, that is a universal true fact to me. I'd still use the word "believe" because I am aware it's a point of view that others dispute, no matter how wrong they are about it. Perhaps you are disputing the word "desired" used later in the post? Why didn't you quote that part then? Technically, with your choice to include doctors as enforcers, and your use of the word "sex" instead of "gender" it sounds more like you're talking about intersex individuals, who can actually have a disputable physical sex. Most transexuals don't dispute the basic fact that they were born physically of the opposite sex than their gender identification. A transwomen isn't about to say "I wasn't born with a penis, doctors just forced that penis on me" unless they're actually intersex, and there's a lot on transexuals who aren't intersex.

Methinks you know very little about Eddie Izzard, since a simply Google would reveal that he's essentially trans-identified, but continues to live as a man mainly for the sake of his career.

I was only Googling definitions. I'm not a comedy fan, so no, I don't know much about Izzard aside that he looks fantastic in heels.

Okay, that's cool. It just bugs me a bit when people use him as a male-identified transvestite, because his stated identity is more complex than that. 'Sall.

Honestly, I'm trans-whatever and all this very specific terminology just makes my head spin. I don't see why everyone has to be oh so careful with labels.

I have heard transgender used as a kind of umbrella term.
And then transexual used as a more specific term.

Izzard has referred to himself as both a transvestite and trangendered.
