Transvestites and transsexuals (more commonly called transgendered or trans) usually have different ideas of gender identification. Transvestites, such as comedian Eddie Izzard, do not usually exhibit any discomfort with their biologically determined sex. Transvestite men want to be men; transvestite women want to be women. Many transvestites choose to adopt habits of dress or appearance of the opposite gender, while retaining all physical characteristics of their sex.

In contrast, transsexuals believe that they should be or are truly the opposite sex. A transsexual may take action to make chemical or anatomical alterations to their bodies, in order to be more similar to their desired sex.

And sexual orientation has nothing to do with either of them. It's a separate thing.

Let me explain what is making people angry about this secret, OP. To be clear, I'm angry too. But I want to help you understand why this is an offensive secret instead of just railing at you, because it's not about whether you as a person are transphobic--it's about the statement you made and its implications.

Trans people are not a third option that exists between or outside of men and women. There are some trans spectrum people who identify that way, like Kate Bornstein, for example, but trans does not always or even frequently mean outside the male/female binary. If you're a gay woman or a straight man, having sex with a trans woman wouldn't exist in opposition to the way you identify sexually. If you're a straight woman or a gay man, having sex with a trans man wouldn't exist in opposition to the way you identify sexually.

Now, there's also the possibility that you're saying you're a straight woman who's considering what a sexual encounter with a trans woman would be like. So the fact that you're reconsidering your sexual identity is totally legitimate. But there's still a big problem here.

The big problem is that you make it sound that the only way that you as a cis person would ever consider having any kind of romanto-sexual encounter with a transgender person would be as a "harmless fling." Essentially, what you've said here is that trans people are only material for one night stands or brief friends-with-benefits setups, not proper relationships. I hope that now that that's clear, it's obvious to you why this secret is deeply problematic.

We won't even go into the fetishizing that's happening here. I don't have time. But I do recommend reading this (http://www.juliaserano.com/TSetiology.html#TransMarch09) speech by Julia Serano. It may help you see your desires in a clearer light and find a more positive way to express them, a way that doesn't hurt the people you're desiring.

That phrase. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Let's see, there's bi-curious, which means that you're open to a same-sex relationship, even though it's not your primary sexual orientation. Following that, "trans-curious" would then mean that you would be open to, uh, "trying on" a different gender, even though it falls outside of your gender identity. "Trans" is not a sexuality. It has nothing to do with sexuality. Being trans(gender) refers to ones gender identity (and therefore expression) falling outside of the gender assigned to them at birth.

Now, transvestites, on the other hand...are crossdressers. People who crossdress are generally comfortable with their gender, and often do not identify with the gender they express while crossdressing. Also, crossdressing includes transvestism, which is generally a fetish form. They are not one and the same.

Transgenderism and transvestism are two different things. Most of what's being talked about, especially here, is transgenderism. Wanting to have a fling with a trans person simply makes you a chaser, and I think it'll be a little difficult to find a trans person who is okay with you fetishizing their identity.

Pfft! Okay, maybe you're a troll, or maybe you just really have no idea what you're on about. It's more than understandable. Trans issues aren't talked about anywhere near as much as gay issues, and people are still way clueless about gay issues. Don't feel too bad, but understand that people will be mad, are not wrong for being mad, and it would be useful to look up info on trans issues before you talk about your desires more.

Check out the wank that erupted over the DAR webcomic when the writer went on about teh hot trans men. That's what I call educational!
