Isn't his accent (in Inception, at least) South African? I didn't see any indication of him being British ._.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Just because he was in Mombasa? I don't see why a British actor would go to the trouble of adopting a different accent when his nationality was left unspecified and had no impact on the plot.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, why can't he be South African? South African and certain accents from Britain sound very similar. And as you said it's not specified where he's from, why the heck not? (Granted he can be from Britain, but there's a chance he's not).

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
imo South African accents are more similar to Australian and New Zealand accents than any Welsh, Scottish or English accent.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I thought the secret meant the character, not the actor. I do't know what nationality or accent he actor has, but since Eames first appeared in South Africa and had a South African-sounding accent, I always assumed.

(I am, admittedly, not anywhere near a hardcore or even relatively knowledgable Inception fan, so aologies for any canon ignorance)

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
uh. he was in Mombasa which is in Kenya, West Africa.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, sorry for my geography fail, then. I've only seen the film once, so I didn't know where specifically the scene took place. But my point still stands; be it west or south, Eames would still have an African accent, not British, regardless of how similar some of them can sound to the unfamiliar.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry but I really do not think that sounded at all like a African accent. It was English RP as far as I'm concerned. But perhaps if he had been raised by English RP speaking parents in Africa, then yes.

no, he had an English accent in Inception.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
But which English accent?

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
RP as far as I remember and heard. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Received_Pronunciation).

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Recieved Pronounciation isn't a solely British accent, though, especially considering that it is also regarded as th Queen's English and Africa was under the rule of the British Empire for quite a number of decades.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
A Southern English RP accent then.

RP - Recieved Pronounciation or a nice well rounded Home Counties BBC accent. Eames certainly sounds like an Englishman, even if it's not specified where he's actually from.

Out of interest, what kind of accent does whoever this guy is have?

Part of me sort of hopes he's Brummie because lol.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
he's from London, born and raised in Hammersmith iirc.

[identity profile] llrael.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, I am disappoint. The media's full of London accents. Needs more West Country. Ooo arr.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Devonian represent /o/

[identity profile] llrael.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Devon accents are win!

I am unfortunately stuck with a middle-class Hampshire accent. I sound horribly posh. It's nasty. I'd strangle babies for something that made me sound less like I just swaggered out of public school.

Thankfully there's a girl at my uni who laughs like "Hoh hoh hoh!" so it could be worse...

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I find posh accents make saying anything even sligtly boorish unintentionally and unreasonably hilarious- nthing gets quite the double take as "A'ight bruv?" said in crystalline Oxfordian. If you would prefer to have everyone ask you about your "Combine 'arvester" with unamusing frequency, be my guest :D

[identity profile] aeonamber.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's any consolation, I love posh-sounding accents. :D And the guy in the secret's.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm rather fond of the Yorkshire accent. mmmm Sean Bean.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad some people think so *has a Yorkshire accent* and hey, Tom Hardy has had a go at it too when he played Heathcliffe that time.
I find Glaswegian and Scouse accents easy and pleasant to listen to, but what I'd love is a mainstream, maybe hollywood film to have someone with a geordie accent. No idea why.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
It's not just the accent, it's the voice. It's all rough and whiskey-ish. Nnnngggghhh. :9
