Honestly, it doesn't really. Not everyone has had the rhyme or reason to read up on medical treatment and testing as I have and I don't expect people to run out and research every too-good-to-be-true claim out there. If anything I blame school systems for not teaching critical thinking, which leaves people to learn it for themselves. I used to believe in all this stuff, until eventually I realized "well, if I don't believe in Reiki why do I believe in Tarot cards?" and I decided that all are in the same basket: money-sinks with no physical, documented evidence of their efficacy.

You don't sound stupid or ignorant. No one knows everything. I'm sure you know a hell of a lot more than me when it comes to other subjects. :)

insinuating everyone who doesn't agree with you is incapable of critical thinking is classy

But you're missing the point. If he didn't want to go through chemo he didn't want to go through it, period, end of, say whatever you want about that. Assuming that he made that choice solely because he believed in acupuncture is showing your lack of critical thinking.

HAHA WOW. PRETENTIOUS MUCH.

Yep, educated too. Apparently you can't say the same. :)

Dude. If you've done so much research, how come you don't know that chemotherapy fucking sucks balls? People undergoing chemo are constantly nauseous, their muscles weaken, their immune system gets royally fucked up, and some people just choose not to do it. They opt for painkillers and palliative care to lessen the symptoms of the cancer. Is that so hard to believe?

Acupuncture works. Whether by the placebo effect or if it actually does something, acupuncture's helped a ton of people. It's one thing to be skeptical, it's another to just denounce a valid alternative medical practice because you don't think it really works.

It's not hard to believe that people opt to forgo chemo. I know it sucks, hell, it stops cell reproduction which is why it messes up your stomach- and intestinal-lining, etc. I can see how that would be scary for some people. It's well within their rights to seek out alternative, unproven and potentially more dangerous treatments, just as it's well within my rights to quirk an eyebrow and question their judgement.

You say acupuncture works. I say, prove it.

[identity profile] inuyatta.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Except how would we prove it within your standards? Could I give you a personally related account without it being dismissed as hearsay?

You're well within your rights to quirk an eyebrow, but to question their judgment as if they're stupid when there are plenty of drugs that were approved for use by the FDA that ended up bearing horrible side effects later on...Sorry, it's hard to find a base for your seemingly selective skepticism here.

Acupuncture works for some people. Drugs and other procedures work for some people. Neither one works for everyone, but neither form of medicine should be considered complete crap.

[identity profile] coyote-feathers.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay then. I can't prove anything to you and you can't prove anything to me. I'm willing to agree to disagree. :)

[identity profile] inuyatta.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing that's a 'no', then?

Very well, I agree to disagree, and I at least appreciate your civility.

If acupuncture was quackery, Johns Hopkins wouldn't list it as a valid treatment in their cancer program. http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/cam/Clinical_Services/Acupuncture

I'm not saying acupuncture cures cancer or it's an all-purpose medicine. I'm saying it does what it was intended to do. Not sure about you, but I hold news articles from USA Today to be a pretty reliable source of information.

And keep in mind the majority of scientific tests were done by MDs with minimal amounts of training while skilled acupuncturists train for years. Here's a study from Harvard anyway. It could be the placebo effect at work, but if you're gonna take any bit of possible proof as a placebo effect, then there's nothing I can say about it.

[identity profile] coyote-feathers.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
That Johns Hopkins link is empty. Are there any articles there that I'm missing or is the page actually totally blank? :\

I am definitely interested in reading validated studies and such ON acupuncture, because YEAH, having an alternative medicine that doesn't kill your stomach lining and actually WORKS would be... well, it would be fan-fucking-tastic and I would totally go for that over chemotherapy. The problem is, I haven't seen the evidence.

BUT, I am totally going to read that Harvard paper because it looks really interesting. And yeah, maybe it'll change my opinion! :D This is the kind of thing I'm looking for, not "well my aunt's hernia was cured by valerian root".

Never stop learning! :D

[personal profile] convault 2010-09-20 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was pretty confused about that, but I'm pretty sure they're just... listing it as opposed to explaining it. I tried the other links and they exist, but they're empty, too. IDK, Johns Hopkins needs to work on its site.

And I don't think it should be a replacement for chemotherapy, but it sounds like a pretty useful supplement to it, as far as reducing symptoms and providing relief are concerned! I've got some anecdotal personal experience with acupuncture so I'm fairly convinced it works on at least some things, but haha, I'm a pretty scientific person myself and anecdotal evidence isn't quite enough to sway me, either.
