This, so much.

I tend to only comment on/review fic when I can give some degree of concrit, and I don't know how many times people have responded negatively and been outraged that I would even dare question their writing. It's shocking how many people don't realize that concrit is an honest attempt to help, not belittle. If they don't want it or don't want to listen to the suggestions, that's fine—but there's no reason for them to get upset when they don't make it clear that they don't want any concrit to begin with. /vaguely cathartic rant

OH GOD THIS.

I wish people could understand something about the way I criticise - I don't comment on bad fic. If I write something critical, it's because I love the bulk of what's been done but something has got to me where I think there's room for improvement. Not because I want to nitpick or bitch about how shit the fic is.

(If the fic is genuinely bad, I roll my eyes and move on. There's a lot of shite out there - Sturgeon's Law affects fic like no other field - and only so many hours in the day to comment.)

There are times when I think it's harder to be a reviewer of fic than it is to be a writer. Writers are working in an established field and playing to people's expectations of characterisation, and if they don't match up then reviewers will criticise that. But... writers borrow from their own lives and their own experiences to provide colour to their stories - "write what you know" in action. So criticising something in a fic is often interpreted as an implicit criticism of the writer's life. Criticising fictional characters in a fictional world? Not a problem. Criticising a life? People are going to get stroppy and start taking the criticism a bit too personally. And it's nigh impossible for reviewers to differentiate the two without advance warning.
