8. Adding a new background and adding a million effects to a piece is really the same thing. Why don't you ask them to provide links? (I'd really like to know where those icons came from too; the pictures in them are really nice and I'd like to see the whole thing instead of a 100x100 filtered crop.)
... Am I the only person here who feels totally awesome when I find art stolen from me? I'd love to see my fanart being cropped for icons and distributed even if it's without my permission. x(

I never, ever see iconmakers make icons of their own stuff unless it's for personal use only. That'd look too egotistical, and that's not good for your reputation.
Going on that I don't know why anyone would assume that the fanart in the icon was drawn by the iconmaker, so I don't really see a problem in using it. I can find the artist and the full picture easily if there's credit given, so that's nice. But if it's not there I don't see why anyone should be blowing a gasket over it, especially if they don't have relations with any of the people involved. That's just silly. =|

I'm not an artist, but I write fics and back in the days when I wrote for bigger fandoms, my stuff would pop up occasionally in fan shrines and small fanfic archives without my permission/sometimes without credit. I didn't care, I was just flattered and thought it was awesome that someone would want to use it.
I don't get the big deal.

(Anonymous) 2007-05-22 07:20 am (UTC)(link)What you feel is okay to do with your fanart is your own business, but 99% of the time the art is being stolen from Japanese artists, almost all of whom do not want their work redistributed without their say-so. The Japanese hate English-speaking fandom because of this -- they think we're only out to steal their fanart.

Does it really matter what the Japanese think of the English-speaking fans anyway?
(I wouldn't say that 99% of it is ripped from Japanese sites either. I see tons from DA and Livejournal; I think I've come across this icon here while browsing Deviantart one day, actually. And I'm still using it because it's pretty. Oh noes, I'm a bad person, aren't I? And so is
