ARE YOU ME?

Seriously, I enjoy this movie except for the ending. Why did she go back to him? I hate that. -_-

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2010-10-30 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The OP can't be you, since s/he is clearly ME...
(-:
Honestly, she should have married Sherlock Holmes Freddie...

[identity profile] spider-rogue.livejournal.com 2010-10-30 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I always thought that she should've gone off and done awesome things by herself, but that's just me. ;)

Queue up, sister. It's total bullshit. They should've never ended up back together. Not for a MOMENT. Destroys the film.

I didn't like ANYTHING about this movie.

[identity profile] haikitteh.livejournal.com 2010-10-30 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's any comfort, George Bernard Shaw did not write that ending in the original play, Pygmalion. He saw no way for them to be together.

[identity profile] joereaves.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
It can be pulled off though by an actor who manages to show how lonely Higgins is during that last song. But I've only seen it done successfully once and that was in an amateur production. Usually I'm with the OP, she needs to go and marry Freddie or something, but I've seen one production where the actor playing Higgins made me cry and feel sympathy for him so that when she came back I was happy. Of course they'd probably still make each other miserable as a couple, but for that moment I was glad she was there.

I love the movie, but the ending does suck.

[identity profile] andromeda3116.livejournal.com 2010-10-30 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. Pygmalion's ending >>>>>>>> My Fair Lady's ending.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-30 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Inb4 you are called classist for even watching the movie.

I think Shaw even disliked it, too. So don't worry. (I know he disliked the ending of the original film.)

But the audience would probably be wondering, wtf happened to her. So that's why they changed it. I don't agree with it either, but I usually accept it ends right after she says, "Goodbye" to him.

[identity profile] cobryn-moy.livejournal.com 2010-10-30 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Rumour has it that Emma Thompson is writing a remake. Fingers crossed for a better ending.

[identity profile] haikitteh.livejournal.com 2010-10-30 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That's exciting news! She did a kick-ass job on "Sense & Sensibility," I bet she'd do Shaw justice.

[identity profile] michikitty.livejournal.com 2010-10-30 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's any comfort to you OP, in the original play, Henry and Eliza don't get together and Bernard Shaw later on even wrote an after word explaining why it was impossible for the two to ever get together.
Edited 2010-10-30 22:14 (UTC)

[identity profile] carbonatedh2o.livejournal.com 2010-10-30 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I agree... I never even saw them together in a romantic way either. If anything, I saw Henry as more of a pseudo-father figure (not a good father figure, though).

And I felt so bad for Freddie too.

[identity profile] ember-firedrake.livejournal.com 2010-10-30 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I dislike the ending too, but I think I hate Grease's ending more. Because changing everything about yourself in order to be with someone is a wonderful message. *eyeroll*

[identity profile] caterfree10.livejournal.com 2010-11-07 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
IA. I had freakin' whiplash from that ending. X_x

(Anonymous) 2010-10-31 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you should read the original Shaw play.

I know Shaw has a whole thing on why they couldn't have been together which I agree with but when exactly was a movie supposed to reflect real life? In the play she married Freddie and ran a flower shop but at the back of her mind, sometimes she would think about him and wonder, it gave me the impression she was in love with him - for all his being an ass. So I do actually like the ending of MFL more than the original play.

[identity profile] ameonna.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Omg, this secret and all the responses made me SO HAPPY.

Further proof that the original creators do indeed know the characters best and haters can suck it. >:)

[identity profile] soukup.livejournal.com 2010-10-31 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Try The Devil Wears Prada. Oddly enough, they're very comparable -- the girl makes the exact opposite choice for exactly the same reasons. I think I might hate TDWP more because it's more contemporary, personally, but YMMV.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-31 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm. How did you feel about the ending to Pretty Woman? 'Cause that was way worse.

[identity profile] belledewinter.livejournal.com 2010-11-03 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. :/

[identity profile] serenemiss.livejournal.com 2010-11-03 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL A+

Weird ending, it doesn't even rank among "happily ever after" endings because they're so different that I just can't see it working. Anyway.
