Same here man. I generally hate anime but everyone was raving about this, so I gave it a try, and it turned out to be giant robots and jiggly tits just like every other bad anime I've seen. welp. maybe it gets better later but that immediately made it clear I wasn't the target audience, and the blatent fanservice is pretty much inexcusable.

I would estimate that Yoko is probably a G-cup, or a DD with a narrow back. As a girl with DD breasts myself, I can tell you that there is NO WAY you could get me to wear a triangle-shaped bikini top with spaghetti straps that's several cup sizes too small, and I'm fairly shameless when it comes to skimpy clothes. For one thing, it would hurt like fuck. Big breasts are heavy, the tiny strings supporting that much weight would either snap under the strain or rub the skin raw. The way the cups sit around her boobs is downright impossible, they'd press in and create the dreaded 'four-boob' effect. Also take note that breasts are very sensitive, under most circumstances she'd be literally freezing her tits off.

I like seeing boobs in anime. I din't like this because the animators seem to be under the impression that a woman's breasts are made of pliable rubber and are independent of the woman's body itself.

Also, Kamina was a much better character when he was female and the main character of Diebuster. It bugs the hell out of me that they had to genderswap Nono and put her in a whole new anime to make her popular.

One of my favorite episodes in TTGL was actually the Yoko-centric one in the 2nd half where she's a teacher and whatnot. She was still a badass and still sexy but that wasn't what was driving her character.

...Until the ending when she rips off all her clothes and is all "LOL BOOBIES!!" again. I think underneath all the jiggle physics and tiny clothes she's a strong character and had the potential of being one of my favorite characters in anime, but none of that really got to develop because the grand majority of the time was spent going ZOMG LOOK AT HER BOOBS!! LOOK AT THEM JIGGLE UP AND DOWN ISN'T THIS SOOO HAWT, GUYS?!?!?!!

If you can't 'endorse' a show because it uses sexually appealing content, then I'm not sure you're endorsement would mean a whole helluva lot.

If you feel ashamed of a show because it uses sexually appealing content, then I think the problem is yours.

If you look at Yoko and see a character who's only used as a sex object, then again, I think the problem lies with you and your inability to look value a character for beyond they sex appeal.

Your comment implies that you see more to the character than sex appeal, but you then contradict this by complaining that the creators only use her for sex appeal? Either you have a greater insite to the character than what is shown by the creators, or anything else that is show (ie the value she has besides sex appeal) is lessend for you by the fct that is comes with sex appeal aswell.

A character can be Fanservice AND more than a 'Sex object' Yoko being a fine example of that. If you cant see anything other than a 'Sex Object' then again, I recommend the problem would be with you.

I don't even mind fanservice if it's thrown in here and there and the characters are interesting enough on their own. An example from GAINAX would be Gunbuster since Noriko's boobies are on screen several times, but she's an awesome character and obviously not there just for fanservice. I'm also not a fan of fanservice where the girls look like their bodies are full of jello or whatever because that's gross (I know it's a cartoon, but damn, people fap to that, really?) And least in Gunbuster the boob physics were more reflective of what you'd see in real life

The worst is High School of the Dead because it's actually a pretty good show in all other respects, it's just the fanservice is over the top ridiculous to the point that it's distracting and dramatically inappropriate

TTGL was a fanservice heavy show, yes, but I don't exactly feel like the man-loving side of my sexuality was exactly famished. The complaining about Yoko here reads like "well I don't like seeing scantily clad women so it's a problem" while ignoring the scantily clad men in the show because the people here like those so it's okay.

Sorry, I think the "problem" is if you don't want to see fanservice of either gender it's... not the show for you.

That's the very thing that bothered me when I tried to watch TTGL. Yoko had a lot of wasted potential as a character, from what I saw. She could've been really awesome if they'd given her the chance, instead of just focusing on the fanservice. But yeah.

I can sort of see both sides here. I love Gurren Lagann, and I don't mind fanservice in principle, mainly because hey, I love it when it's geared towards me (straight female), so why shouldn't others also get to enjoy extra sexual appeal? I also think Yoko was an awesome character regardless of what she was wearing.

However, I've got to admit the treatment of Yoko fanservice-wise did make me wince. Why? Because while the show is also filled to the brim with hot fanservicey men, they were always characters first and fanservice second. Kamina was just there being his crazy awesome self and happening to be shirtless and gorgeous while he was at it. I wouldn't really have minded if Yoko similarly went around being badass and incidentally wearing something kind of ridiculously skimpy while she was at it - again, yeah, blatantly just eye candy for men(/lesbian/bisexual women), but if I'm enjoying blatant eye candy, why shouldn't they?

But there was so much attention lavished on the fanservice in her case. A lot of the time they seemed unable to show her on-screen without using some ridiculous camera angle to show off her boobs, in a way that really just detracted from what she was actually saying or doing. That, to me, is demeaning to her character, and I honestly think I would feel kind of creepy and annoyed watching a male character get the same treatment.

Again, I still think she was an awesome character as written - she just got way the wrong kind of attention from the camera. :/

I don't really mind fanservice itself but it bothers me that Yoko never really grew out of her shallow role as the obligatory "pair of tits" to balance the male-prominent cast.

How do you even describe this chick personality-wise? She's, uh... shown to be a bit wiser than the guys. That's the only trait I can think of. Wow, what depth.

Sure she destroys a couple of mechs to appear useful, but you could easily erase her from the entire show without too many changes to the main plot. The writers never seemed to have much AMBITION with the character; tits were always first priority. Just a bunch of excuses for her to tag along so she could wiggle her chest, that's how it felt to me.

I loved watching Gurren Lagann, and really did enjoy Yoko as a character. For the most part, I actually didn't mind the whole short-shorts and bikini top, since IIRC there was a comment that that was just what she was comfortable wearing. However, there is that not so fine line when so-called "comfortable" crosses into 'impractical'. I just cannot believe that any woman as active as Yoko with breasts those size could get away with a top that small. Would it really have killed them to at least give her a bra that actually fit properly and didn't look like it was about to pop up every time she started jumping around. But then I guess that's just more of a pet peeve than anything. Like others have said, there was plenty of fanservice all around, it was just that much more obvious (and character defining..) with Yoko.

I like Yoko. She's my second favorite character (behind Simon), and although I do agree with op that a LOT more could have been done with her, she does have some depth. Is she as developed as, say, Simon? No, but the thing you have to remember is that after Nia arrived pretty much every character become background material. I'm not saying this with bitterness (I love Nia), Gainax has actually said themselves it's Simon and Nia's story. We get brief glimpses into development for Yoko, but unless you're looking for them they aren't painfully obvious. I'm not arguing against her being fanservice (because she is), but she isn't as two-dimensional as people think.

Although I will agree with her taste in clothing is ridiculous, but hey, maybe her spine was replaced by an iron rod or something.

And then there's the shower scene. You know, the very subtle, sad scene to show her heartbreak over you-know-what that is actually light on t/a? The manga artist decided that was the perfect time for nipples.
