I don't really mind fanservice itself but it bothers me that Yoko never really grew out of her shallow role as the obligatory "pair of tits" to balance the male-prominent cast.

How do you even describe this chick personality-wise? She's, uh... shown to be a bit wiser than the guys. That's the only trait I can think of. Wow, what depth.

Sure she destroys a couple of mechs to appear useful, but you could easily erase her from the entire show without too many changes to the main plot. The writers never seemed to have much AMBITION with the character; tits were always first priority. Just a bunch of excuses for her to tag along so she could wiggle her chest, that's how it felt to me.

I would describe Yoko as brave, a little bit brash and reckless but grounded, kind of jaded, and strong enough to open her heart to people knowing that she was likely to get hurt. She had a lot of sort of "tsundere" qualities, but didn't have the stereotypical tendency to hide behind the 'dere to avoid emotional attachments.

Nnnno? She's the one scolding others for being brash and reckless.

Which is why she scolds others. This I agree with, but it isn't so much a personality than a writer's position to shout "YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG STUPID" at the reckless leads every so often. Most basic trope imaginable for a supporting female. Standing back and complaining, that is.

Seriously. What role did she even play in this show, besides "TITS" and potential love interest?

Everyone talks about how what a ~strong character~ she is because she became a teacher or whatever, never mind that any development she had was vastly outweighed by how much she was just used for fanservice.

THIS to me so much. I honestly don't know why everyone goes on about how she's such a 'strong' character. She has a gun. She's the same as any other obligatory fanservice 'girl with a gun', just because she shoots things doesnt make her 'a strong character'. She barely has a personality anyway. Even Nia had more depth to me.
Hell I'm not even -remotely- a feminist and Yoko pisses me off.

Also because my cat was called Yoko; my mum named her after John Lennon's wife because she's a big Beatles fan and now everyone thinks I named her after Mrs Tits. (even though she was named like 13 years before GL came out)
