So... do you also refuse to read things with random panty shots/easily destroyed clothing/gratuitous toplessness/randomly pretty or sexualized fight scenes and or injuries/a tentacle monster of the week/any of the VAST array of other devices authors include? Would you look down on it the same of one of the characters were female so it was more of a het ship tease?

I can understand disliking excessive fanservice, but singling out yaoi and yaoi fans makes you seem like sorta a douche, honestly.

Nudity has nothing to do with yaoi undertones.
I despise it just as much when girls act gay to appeal to the audience, though it's not nearly as common.

what about when people play up a hetero romance to titillate the audience? Do you think there's something wrong with random het UST in shows?

I'm sure OP will agree with me when I say that ALL OF IT IS WRONG AND SINFUL AND SEX? HINTS OF SEX? HINTS OF UST? IN MANGA?! WHAT MADNESS OR DEVILRY IS THIS? GET THEM ALL TO A NUNNERY. OP AND I WILL ATTEMPT TO KEEP OUR DELICATE SENSIBILITIES UNSCATHED BY SUCH DISPLAYS OF DISGUSTING SINFULNESS.

Nudity has everything to do with deliberate--and sometimes exploitative--fanservice, and it's very common. It's still the writer including something to titillate the audience which has no purpose to the story, and when it becomes gratuitous, objectifying.

Also, female characters acting gay to appeal to a male audience is pretty common in both anime/manga and Western television. The faux lesbian kiss is a pretty common ratings baiting tactic during sweeps.

You have every right not to like things like that, to be bothered by them, whatever. I do wonder where you draw the line of "yaoi under tones," though, and the way you phrase your secret both singles out ONE PARTICULAR KIND OF FANSERVICE in a particularly loaded way, and comes off as dicky and judgmental toward both the author and the people who enjoy those works

What if the author doesn't give two shits about the audience because it appeals to themselves?

Author of a series with a lot of Ho Yay could be a dude, author of a series with a lot of Les Yay could be a woman. You never know- if your issue is about straight people exploiting gay people of the opposite sex, I mean.

Hetalia, which has pretty blatant Ho Yay and guy/guy fanservice, is written by a man.

+1 Same goes for Berserk, the author is very obviously enjoying male nudity, blood, huge swords and loads of Ho Yay.

Though I kind of know what OP means, sometimes you get a feeling that the fanservice is so empty, only there to sell more stuff. No soul in it.

Okay, so then do "yaoi undertones" to you mean, "characters who are specifically defined in the text as being 100% straight having random gay UST?"

Not the OP, but...

I don't like in-your-face fanservice, but I can tolerate it a little more than gay undertones. Mainly because for some reason when a character is over-sexualized for fanservice it seems less scuzzy than hinting at an orientation or identity that not only isn't necessarily there but contributes nothing to the plot or the character itself. (At least, to me.) Like we're supposed to like a character more just because of their (hinted or otherwise) orientation.

It doesn't help that sometimes it's played up to intentionally make the character seem obnoxious and annoying.
