I gotta say, I feel sorry for you, but I am so against the idea that Science should make it possible. There are two sexes for a reason. I don't want science taking away what makes me a woman and giving to a man.

I know this is going to bunch a few panties, so bring it on.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-14 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, that's just your opinion. I'm waiting on the SO SELFISH OVERPOPULATION KIDS NEED ADOPTED bitching.

[identity profile] 131-di.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
no, I'm with you. I really don't want to think of the unfortunate consequences of giving men the ability to get pregnant and what that means for me as a woman.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-14 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
What do you think would be the unfortunate consequences of giving men the ability to get pergnant and what do you suppose would that mean for you as a woman?

(Anonymous) 2011-01-14 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
While I'm very sorry for OP and can understand his wish (I'm bi and could never have a biological child with my girlfriend), I'm also against the idea of a man getting pregnant.
Pregnancy is the only thing that makes women useful in the eyes of a strictly patriarchal society. Now think men could suddenly give birth to children as well... it would probably become a completely new way for men to dominate the female gender.

Or I'm just overthinking this.

PS: The same counts for female humans suddenly developping a way to impregnate each other or themselves.

[identity profile] 131-di.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
you're hardly overthinking it - it's exactly what would happen.

but then again I know just about 0 men that fit into the usual standard that would even begin to like the idea of birthing children themselves.

Seriously. What the hell. You think alpha-male types would want to go through the pain and difficulty of having (and rearing) their own children? I thought the Patriarchy was all about keeping barefoot in the kitchen with the kids so the men could work and play golf.

(OP, I support your dream. I wish biology didn't stand in your way.)

So much fail here. I don't even know where to start ...

(Anonymous) 2011-01-14 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
i agree

its even sadder that I have to go into anon to agree with you ON A SIMPLE BIOLOGICAL FUNCTION

maybe one day there will be a way to to genetically blend a child from m/m or f/f genes, and I am all for that, but seriously, leave the surrogacy part to the being who is obviously biologically designed for that purpose.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
Some men can already get pregnant. Being a man or woman isn't just about the parts you're born with.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-14 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
I really wish people would actually say "transmen" when making a statement like this. When you say "men" the assumption is biological, and no, biological men cannot get pregnant.

Pretty sure that the idea of pregnancy relies heavily on the "parts that you're born with."

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
But the argument wasn't about biological capacity. It was about gender and gender roles, and the idea that being pregnant and bearing children is essentially a feminine thing. A lot of male-identified people who have had children would disagree with that. Having kids didn't make them less masculine or male.

(Also, maybe the assumption is biological for you. And that's not unreasonable since most men are born with typically male bodies. But it's not the assumption for me.)

different anon

(Anonymous) 2011-01-14 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I know I'm being heteronormative/other more specific word I don't know, here, but it kind of sounds like you're just picking a fight. In a debate directly about transgender issues, sure, we'd be more careful using words like 'man' and 'woman'. If you stop everyone who ever uses the word 'man' with 'that's not the assumption I make!', though, you'd have a really slow time ever getting out conversations.

"Where are your shoes?"

"Men or women's shoes?"

"... shoes for the biologically male."

y'know?

Re: different anon

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-01-14 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
*shrugs* Not picking a fight. Just pointing out that if men getting pregnant steals an important experience from women, I think it's worth considering the fact that there have been some male people getting pregnant for a while. I won't deny that if all men could get pregnant, it would have a much bigger effect on society, and on women, than only a small percentage of men being able to get pregnant does. But I don't think it's an irrelevant point if someone is going to talk about how reproductive abilities relate to gender roles in society, or a person's identity. It's a complicated issue, even for non-trans people.

yet another anon

(Anonymous) 2011-01-14 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
I just want to say, as a transman, I really appreciate it when people point out stuff like you did at the beginning of this thread. :)

(Anonymous) 2011-01-14 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
lol the ability to get pregnant is what makes you a woman?

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-01-15 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
Despite my lack of a uterus, I'm still a woman, thanks. Also, despite having no biological children to justify my existence, I'm a woman. More importantly, I'm a human being.

If a man wants to have my nonexistent children in my place, have at it.
