Yeah except making shows with pure eye candy in them just makes for shitty shows. Watch porn if you want eye candy 24/7. Also if we reduce all male characters down to a single token like what females get, then you'd get way way hotter guys in all sorts of compromising positions throughout the TV show. So what I am tryin to say is that its a win-win situation.

I have nothing on topic to say, but damn 'The Wire' was f**king superb.

(and I could totally stand to see more semi-naked Idris Elba)

(Anonymous) 2011-01-16 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
And also - your eye candy is not my eye candy. (Which is actually not a completely valid argument on my part. I do prefer girl eye candy but, let's face it, pretty is pretty. Just, equal opportunity eye candy, you know. Also, plot and characterization and not being a limpet.)

I can't focus on the issue at hand because now all I'm thinking about is Stringer Bell. Idris Elba needs to do an episode of SPN.

Are you fucking shitting me? You want half the population that is already mis and underrepresented in media to remain so just so that you can get off? It is not impossible to have badass roles for both women and men, and men have already got that covered. Attitudes like this just encourage the idea that being a woman is neither good nor relatable. That women aren't made to be protagonists - they take side roles, as love interests or side kicks made into love interests. That a woman isn't worth anything if she hasn't got a man beside her and that men are just generally worth more.

Jesus Christ anon, if you had said this to my face I would have punched you already for being so shortsighted.

I enjoy cute guys in TV shows as much as the next person (trust me, ask my friends), but I'm gonna have to disagree with you anon. We can have badass female characters and cute guys at the same time. The sad part is that we mostly get badass men in our shows and the women are usually around as side characters or love interests.

So... while I am one of the annoying fangirly types that will squee over sexy guys in shows, I do think we need more badass females in them.

[identity profile] mfirefly10.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, I prefer plot and characterization but to each her own.

Also, it feels odd to see The Wire grouped in with those other shows.

[identity profile] graziaplena.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
ALSO, there is a badass female in your secret, therefore your point is invalid. Hmph.

but it's irl so uh you gotta think about equality and stuff

Right on. I mean, I guess objectification is never great, but after decades of men sort of being socially dominant and all, I like the idea that the media is responding to the idea of the female gaze and all that. (Of course, some ladies like to look at hot ladies as well, but...in general, it's an interesting trend.)

(Anonymous) 2011-01-16 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
WILL NO ONE THINK OF THE LESBIANS?

Really don't agree with you.

Of course I'd ogle the badass women too.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-17 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'll partially agree with you, anon. I understand women, etc, etc what ever other butthurt people said. I think, maybe more to your point, if they're going to hire nearly all actresses based on their ability to get 18-to-35-year-old men to watch a program regardless of what it's about, they should hire nearly all actors to the same level of attractiveness based on focus grouping to death what 18-to-35 women would like men on tv to look like. I don't see why we can't exploit men equally for their looks.

Mehhhhh I'm all for The Female Gaze, but that shouldn't negate the presence of badass ladies (who can also be hot, for those of us who also enjoy some hot ladies)!

I for one would also like more women to ogle.

Haha, I love this secret.

I love male eye-candy too.

But personally I'd miss kick-ass girls.

At least you're honest about it, unlike 95% of the people in this very thread who claim they don't feel the same way.

I lol'ed. 'Cause you said badass women against bad ass eye candy men and there you have KIMA !!!!!!! So I lol'ed.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-17 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
I can't completely hate on this, because to be honest there are some shows I've watched because it's cheesy fun and it has good eyecandy, but every female in those shows are always atrocious.

And I always end up thinking that they should just get rid of the females entirely rather then make me endure such badly written/acted females.

But I'd rather the industry change so I don't have to endure that anymore, fire all the male writers who think they know what a "badass" female means. And please stop hiring actresses just because they're "that right kind of sexy" even though they can't act worth shit.

There will always be male eye candy so don't worry. But we still need those people who can't create cool females to be fired and kicked out of Hollywood.
