Are you fucking shitting me? You want half the population that is already mis and underrepresented in media to remain so just so that you can get off? It is not impossible to have badass roles for both women and men, and men have already got that covered. Attitudes like this just encourage the idea that being a woman is neither good nor relatable. That women aren't made to be protagonists - they take side roles, as love interests or side kicks made into love interests. That a woman isn't worth anything if she hasn't got a man beside her and that men are just generally worth more.

Jesus Christ anon, if you had said this to my face I would have punched you already for being so shortsighted.

+5

Absolutely.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! Ditto, ditto, ditto to that!

[identity profile] immortality.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a good comment and you should feel good.

[identity profile] enigmatic-eel.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I would, but I'm too enraged.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-16 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOVE YOU.

This this, absolutely this. =/

A+

(Anonymous) 2011-01-16 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, I don't get your sudden rage.
I mean, aren't there already loads of strong, badass female characters on TV? Buffy, Xena and Gabrielle, Echo from Dollhouse, pretty much every female character from Firefly, Scully the legend of Female TV Badassery, Kahlan and Cara from Legend of the Seeker, Sarah Connor and Cameron from Sarah Connor Chronicles, and on less kicking-the-crap-out-of-people and more being-strong-and-awesome sense of the word badass, the ladies from Grey's Anatomy, Kelly from Misfits, Beckett from Castle, Carla from Scrubs...I could go on, but screw it, if you think there aren't any badass female characters on TV out there, you're obviously not watching the right kinda shows :3
I rest my case.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-16 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it says a lot that half of the shows you just mentioned are no longer airing.

[identity profile] enigmatic-eel.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I love you, anon.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-16 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, in my defence that's mostly because I don't own a television and have only started watching TV shows recently, and tend to stick to the completed ones.
But I do see what you mean. I just think that instead of being so negative, people should realise that things are changing for the better and get out there and help make that change happen!

(Anonymous) 2011-01-17 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Um, yeah. When shows with badass women consistently last more than half a season (ie, how long do you seriously think Supernatural would have stuck around if it had been about the Winchester sisters?), let me know.

[identity profile] enigmatic-eel.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying that there are no badass females in TV. I'm well aware that there are but the ratio of male to female badasses is severely unbalanced. Not just in television, but in pretty much every kind of popular media. Male protagonists vastly outnumber female ones and it's a sign of the sexism that still pervades our society as a whole. Sexism against which I feel incredibly strongly, so to see someone saying that they don't mind the status quo because of such an incredibly shallow reason not only presses my berserk button, it smashes it in with a hammer.

Get it now?

(Anonymous) 2011-01-16 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure man, I get what you're saying. I just wish there was a bit less 'oh noes we need more strong women on tv woe is us' going on and a bit more 'hey there's actually a wealth of strong women on tv, let's make more!'
I dunno. It just seems to me that people are too busy concentrating on what's lacking instead of focusing on what's improving and helping it improve.
But y'know, to each his own and all that. I guess you've a right to feel self-righteous anger, and the OP is a bit of an idiot, so I don't even know why I'm still here arguing. Peace out.

[identity profile] enigmatic-eel.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not woe is anyone and while I understand that you're not trying to insult me I'm currently extremely angry and telling me that I'm just being too negative is not going to make me less angry.

You know what's lacking? Women. Gay men. Gay women. People of any gender and sexuality that isn't cis and straight. And do you know why I'm focusing on it? So that people will fucking pay attention to it. You can't just say "Oh, well we have some strong women on TV now, so we don't need to worry so much" and hope that everything will be hunky dory. Because the things that are starting to improve will still need improvement and the things that we're lacking need to actually have attention paid to them.

The things we see in the media are important. They normalise things, which is why homosexuality, and bisexuality, and transgendered people and even women are still 'not normal'. They don't get representation, and the representation they do get is often stereotyped at best and completely false at worst.

I get that you get my point, but I need to make it clear as to why I'm so angry. These things are important, you can't just brush it aside because you think it doesn't really concern you, or that it isn't really an issue anymore.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not so sure it's a lack of women exactly.

I see plenty of women on my TV.

It's more like, lack of variation in women, as I feel a lot of women/girls on TV are basically the same character type in different incarnations...if that makes sense?
A type that whole segments of the population do not even identify with...

[identity profile] joules-burn.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
This. I see plenty of women on TV, but most of the time they're barely a character and all seem to come in variations of boobs, look at my parted lips I'm helpless and can someone please get a man to save me.

Even if the female is 'spunky' and seems strong to begin with it normally somehow falls into the 'a man is finally saving me' or more classic 'btw I have daddy issues'. It's BORING, and I'm tired of seeing actresses that seem to primarily be attempting to constantly pose for a moving photograph for Harry Potter universe Myspace.

[identity profile] enigmatic-eel.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That's an important distinction to make and thank you for making it. I was too angry to think about it at the time.

[identity profile] beuk.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
ilu for this comment

[identity profile] aaskew.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
thanks for clarifying. I'm a trans guy who would like representation in media, but feels guilty about it because trans men are still men and thus already overrepresented.

I may be a little bit in love with you.

[identity profile] enigmatic-eel.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
O-oh my, you'll make me blush :>

(Anonymous) 2011-01-17 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't understand why you're so angry, OP didn't say they wanted less women, or none at all, they just said they didn't mind the lack of them.

[identity profile] enigmatic-eel.livejournal.com 2011-01-17 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, because that's so much better. There's only a little bit of discrimination, we can all go home now.
