But... meat is so tasty!

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
why is there always at least one person who has to share this viewpoint when it comes to talking about or being vegetarian? if this was a thread about racism and someone popped in and said something akin to what you're saying, there would wank for all the ages. but because their animals and apparently making jokes/snide remarks about how "tasty" meat is, then... it's okay?

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
lol how can you equate racism and eating meat? Meat is almost objectively tasty to humans, we evolved to like the taste of meat because it contains a lot of energy. There's no racism equivalent; if somebody says "Yeah but blacks really can dance/jump/run better, IT'S EVOLUTIONARY" it's just bullshit fake science.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I think cannibalism is morally acceptable in certain situations. I guess it's evolutionary as well.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
ummm ok? what are you trying to express here?
(I think cannibalism is fine if the person's already dead and their family/friends have no objections or if they're dead and you're in a survival situation)

[identity profile] attentie.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
seconded. there is no inherent evil in cannibalism, only in the murdering people beforehand part.

[identity profile] cypherwulf.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Because in suffering, all are equal.

[identity profile] tofuwater.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
this. so much. thank you.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL no. Vegetarians/vegans are not an oppressed minority. Don't even try.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
i think anon wasn't talking about people who are veg*, anon was talking about animals. and while animals aren't an oppressed minority the same way for example poc are, western human cultures do create and maintain a hierarchy in which humans are seen as above animals, and animals are treated accordingly. (protip: it's not a coincidence that oppressed minorities are regularly compared to or even literally seen as animals.)

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Animals are below humans. Also the fact you stated this may mean…you are one of the animal lovers not above killing humans if it means 'one more doggie can live'. How we treat animals is up to question here, not whether we are on equal grounds.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
um, wow, that's really nice how you made the jump from my criticism of human animal relations to claiming that i am a potential killer. people like you are the reason why my friends ended up in prison despite there being no evidence that they ever committed any crimes at all. fuck you very much.

for the record: i am not an animal lover and killing isn't exactly my type of activism.

you are not the one who gets to decide what is up to question here and what isn't. how we treat animals is based on how we see animals. and there are so, so many things wrong with how we see animals that result in our mistreatment of them. yeah, other animals are not on equal grounds with humans in the sense that there are some significant characteristics that distinguish humans from other animals. but in other important ways, we are similar. i just don't think there's a need to establish that we are infinitely better or more important.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
if your friend is in prison…then he/she obviously did something wrong and that has nothing to do with me or people like me.

Good, you had me worried there.

Animals are not on equal grounds with us, period. Sorry but until they start forming societies and religions and all the other things that make humans, human then they will never be. However that means we, as the superior beings, must respect them and that we need them to live. This means we should not torture animals, even if they are to be eaten. Respect their habitat and not go about destroying it. Do not over hunt any animal as it means less in the long run for all of us and that people will starve.

On this note: despite my arguments I don't care who's a vegan/vegetarian and if they want to be that's fine. I have a problem when people start to tell me I should be a vegan/vegetarian or that's how my child should be raised, which is slowly what's happening as the 'nanny state' starts to take over our lives like communism. Meat is not killing anyone (but the animals eaten) it's a bad diet of more meat then veggies and meats heavy in fats that kill people. That or if the meat is diseased…but the same stuff happens to plants so that's more a matter of how it's farmed over whether it should be eaten or not.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
The only reason why they were imprisoned is that someone got the idea that because they openly protested against the fur trade, they could also be responsible for crimes that have been comitted in the name of animal rights. As I said, so far no evidence to support this claim has come up.

I already acknowledged that there are things that distinguish humans from other animals. However, I fail to see how forming societies and having totally awesome stuff like religion makes us superior to animals. You've gotta explain that one to me.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-23 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone's feeling melodramatic aren't they? Vegetarians aren't an oppressed minority - point in fact, a lot of places have plenty of meals specifically vegetarian, and offer the option to make many more vegetarian. While it might be where your located, I'm a little hesitant to think it's anywhere near what your comparing it to.

As for why...because, by being a vegetarian your making the *choice* not to eat meat. Granted, there can be any number of reasons as to why someone makes that choice, but that is the choice that defines the lifestyle.

[identity profile] cypherwulf.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
This person isn't talking about veg people being repressed, they're talking about animals being repressed. And as for choice, it's certainly not a choice for the animals.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps it isn't, but if we were to release them into the wild what do you think would happen? Other animals would eat them - so why not us as well? There are certain benefits to eating mean, provided it's in moderation.

That said, I'm not saying that I believe that there shouldn't be more laws about the care of animals - some horrifying things do happen. But prey animals are prey animals - and like it or not, humans are animals as well. That may not sit easily with your sense of eithics, but it is a fact.

[identity profile] cypherwulf.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
A vegan world won't come overnight, so the idea of releasing all those animals into the wild is a bit of a strawman argument. We'll simply stop breeding them for our purposes as fewer people use animals. And besides, a life in the wild where an animal at least has a chance to survive to old age is better than certain death at a young age in mostly terrible conditions.

I don't understand your last point at all. Sorry. What does biology have to do with our ability to make choices?

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand your last point at all. Sorry. What does biology have to do with our ability to make choices?

...Are you serious.

[identity profile] cypherwulf.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, so you're basically saying that because I biologically CAN have babies, that I MUST. That is what I'm getting from that.
Your biology doesn't rule your life, so stop using it as an excuse. Take some responsibility.

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Lol that's not what anyone is saying. But come on, are you telling me you HONESTLY don't think about any of the biology when you make an entire lifestyle choice? Especially on such a hot topic where those points are going to be brought up?

[identity profile] cypherwulf.livejournal.com 2011-01-23 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I know right? LOLOLOL HURRR NEVER HEARD THAT ONE BEFORE.

[identity profile] elysian-stars.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not gonna touch your comparison to racism, but apart from that, you're right. There does always seem to be one person who feels like they have to say something ~clever~ like 'but if we weren't meant to eat animals they wouldn't be made of meat lololol'. It's deeply tiresome.

(Anonymous) 2011-01-24 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
agreed

[identity profile] hello-ilu.livejournal.com 2011-01-24 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
fake meat products ftw.

no seriously, I've fooled hardcore omnivores with that shit.

....maybe it makes me a ~~bad vegetarian, what the fuck everrrrrrr
