Always found Ghibli films to be kinda overrated. I love it when some weaboos argue that they are much deeper than Disney movies - they aren't. They are actually pretty much the same: good animated movies for kids but that's it.

Depends which ones your talking about. Ghiblis made a lot of films, not all by Miyazaki and not all are for kids.

Okay, I'll bite:

Mention the Disney animated films that go to the lengths of Grave of Fireflies. No, Lion King is not one of them.

I haven't seen that movie so I can't comment. When I said I think Ghibli is overrated I was talking about some fans who worship everything the studio produces. Obviously there might be exceptions.

Grave of the Fireflies is definitely not for children, although I had to watch it as a child for Japanese Culture class. Now it's been almost a decade since I've last seen the film, it is about two children who struggle with leukemia during the World War II bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan. They go through various difficulties and abuse and struggle to stay alive. I can't remember much, but perhaps the most horrifying scenes from that film was the older brother being abused by I can't remember whom, and the scene where a bunch of bodies were rotting away and maggots were eating the dead flesh. Yeah. If there was a Disney film that is equivalent to this, then I'd have to say the controversial Song of the South, but I don't think that film had gore in it.

Nitpick:

-Grave of the Fireflies happened in Kobe, Japan. It wasn't the A-bomb that rained down on their city, it was fire bombs.

-The two kids didn't get leukemia. The little girl died of malnutrition and the boy followed soon after, dying of starvation.

The brother got beaten up by a man from whom he was stealing vegetables from.

thing is, Ghibli doesn't just make kids movies. Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoke, Nausica Of the Valley of the wind? Not for kids. And their other films? Really other than Ponyo and Totoro, none of the movies are directly meant for kids, like Pixar films, they reach out to a wide audience. When I think disney films I think of a movie with humor, good music, incredibly crappy romance plots and the like. But I don't think of a movie addressing the effects of world war two (Grave Of the Fireflies), or dealing with enviromential issues (Princess Mononoke, Nausica, the one with the tanuki, Ponyo, etc), or having a downer or bitersweet ending (so many...)

Before you criticize ghibli films for not being deep, I'd strongly suggest you actually take the time to actually watch the Ghibli films that aren't Ponyo, Spirited Away, or Totoro. I'd personally suggest you watch the first three films I mentioned, but keep a tissue box close at hand while watching grave of the fireflies.
