Her popularity seemed to skyrocket after she threw Santana into the lockers, because that's funny when it happens to girls. She'll probably be promoted to regular next season and steal more screentime from Mercedes and Tina, so no worries.

because that's funny when it happens to girls.

You know, that is a good point. It never fails to piss me off the way violence between girls is either sexy or funny, and violence by women against men is also funny, but between men is badass or very serious business and by men against women is ALWAYS terrible no matter what, even if almost nothing happens (like the scene with Will and Terri when he finds out she was faking the pregnancy). The double standards, particularly on this show, are ridiculous.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It amazes that people find Will so terrible for [gasp] grabbing Terri's arms and pulling up her to shirt (see she if she was really pregnant), but find Sue HI-larious! despite her phycially abusing students on more than a few occasions.

'Tis the nature of glee, for sure. The plots are not exactly subtle or nuanced. However, I have to admit that I actually laughed at that scene (although they did ultimately take it WAY too far with Santana repeatedly being SMASHED into lockers). I like both Santana and Lauren a lot, and I think that the fight kind of worked because it was actually in character / good character development for both of them - something that doesn't happen that often on Glee! Santana was being her regular ballsy / bitchy self, and she went over the top with it, as per usual. Lauren was kinda laid back, kinda 'You really wanna do this? OK, whatevs, I guess I have to SCHOOL A BITCH' I like Santana, but she actually doesn't get her comeuppance as much as she should.

So yeah, that scene actually kinda worked for me in a weird way, but if you look at it realistically AT ALL, it was gross. But it's Glee - they write their plots with a paint roller rather than a quill.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I hated that scene so fucking much.

And Tina and Mercedes deserve more screentime :(

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
If it helps, I almost got sick watching that scene because I thought it was disgusting. I could barely watch the whole scene--it went on for way too long, and the lack of proper addressing of the issue was even more ridiculous.

I love Lauren for other reasons, but if people really love her because she trashed a girl half her size in a way that, in real life, could have seriously injured someone of Santana's size? I kind of have some problems with that.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of glad that I wasn't the only one bothered by that scene.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-21 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, if that's what they need to do something slightly interesting with a female character, I'd kind of be okay with that. Mercedes has had a couple of good subplots, but everything with Tina for the last year, it seems, is just so WTF.

And it's not like any of them are getting much respect; I was pretty floored that they let Lauren stand up for herself and Puck hasn't screwed her over yet, to attract drama-lamas and lawlz.

And yes, Glee is guilty of a girl!violence double-standard, but let's not forget that in this case, at least, the less-popular freak was giving the bitchy it girl her comeuppance. It was dumb and Glee is dumb, but it wasn't as horrible as, say, Sue thinking it's okay to literally use her cheerios as cannon fodder.

Lauren is quickly become so much more than a stereotype, and I love it <3

I see where you're coming from.

I personally laugh at certain lines of hers because they are hilarious, and it has nothing to do with how much she weighs :/

[identity profile] iteari.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Lauren's been written well so far (though as awesome as the showdown was with her and Santana, I'm still weirded out that no one says anything about the fact that they were in school when it happened and neither got punished!)

I really wish Ryan Murphy takes it further and uses her as a way to deconstruct the way people like OP's friend view fat people. But that's expecting too much...

Well, OP, you could always show your friend the show, Huge. It did a beautiful job with its fat characters and I only wish the rest of the media would take that cue.

Hell, maybe Glee could hire Savannah Dooley and clean up the hot mess of season 2.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I think she's starting to become an interesting, cool character, but I can't really blame someone for just seeing her as a joke, since that's how she's portrayed a lot. I mean, all the eating jokes? Really? We're still doing that? The Puck stuff is interesting; they just need to go a little more in-depth and give her a personality and all.

[identity profile] joyful.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like her, but that has nothing to do with how she looks like :/

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-02-19 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The majority of viewers where? If it's the U.S.A., and especially if it's neither of the trendy megalopolises of the two coasts, and ESPECIALLY if it's somewhere not very rich, it's getting more and more likely that an average viewer will also be obese, or at least seriously overweight.

Which means something but I lost my train of thought

Off-topic, but thanks to your icon, all I can picture now is Toph just sitting there, being all like, "wtf are you talking about, OP? 'Normal weight'? Eh, whatever, I don't care anymore," and then running off to play in mud again. XD

Now THAT's a character I want on Glee. ;P

... well, if it helps, I don't mock her because she's fat, I mock her because she's irritating as fuck.

And as to your roommate, I think it's unrealistic to expect that the writers weren't looking for at least some of their audience to react like she did, and to like the character for her laugh-at-able value.

(Anonymous) 2011-02-20 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I wish I could view her character without the built in bias of being a girl in her size range. I have no idea if I'd hate her half as much as I do if I were thin or average weight.

[identity profile] cindyisboring.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
You should worry that the writers see her this way too.

[identity profile] valenciapilgrim.livejournal.com 2011-02-20 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, I don't know your roommate at all, but have you ever considered that maybe she *is* somewhat of a bad person? Just because the "average" person might see overweight people as nothing more than comic relief doesn't mean it's OK. Like, I could almost understand someone saying something like "Oh, I don't understand much about politics or current events, I'm just just your average Joe." But it doesn't take effort, time, or brains to have a little bit of compassion. Call me crazy, but that's one of the first things I look for in a friend.

Sorry, I'm probably blowing this way out of proportion. I think it's OK to laugh at everyone, including "fat chicks" - especially if it's done right. I just bristle at the idea that it's OK to deny a group of people respect and dignity just because everyone else is doing it. To me, that's a huge part of what makes you a "good" or "bad" person (as much as you can ever apply either one of those labels to a person).

... I really like her. ):

I'm overweight. Not as heavy as Lauren is but still, I am obese. And... and she really makes me feel good about myself.

Her and Mercede's confidence is currently inspiring my own re-imagining of myself as someone secure in my weight and body and I could NOT be happier. They are my templates of beauty and I am honored to look like them.
