More specifically, in ' and '.

How is it equality when they scream and go all CAPSLOCK on words like 'bitch' but two posts later are calling men all the names under the sun. The same 'feminists' go into CAPSLOCK mode when a women's tortured, but think that a guy being tortured is hot.

Either both sexes get insulted, tortured, etc. or neither does.

Personally, I call a spade a spade: if the woman's a bitch, I'll call her a bitch. If the guy's a dick, I'll call him a dick. The torture scenes make me unconfortable, whether it's Sam or Meg being tortured.

A 'feminist' is a feminist who wants the women to be free of isults and "offensive" words, while continuing to insult men using the equivilent.

(Not using my lj name because I don't want an inbox of flames.)

It's about differences in power and privilege that have existed for a long, long time.

Suppose there's a show set in the US that has white actors and black actors. If the white actors are shown being tortured, yeah, it's just that. But if the black characters are shown to be tortured? It would make everyone uneast, and rightly so. If a white character is called "white trash" or "whitey" it's just someone trying to be mean to them, but if someone hurls racial slurs at a black character? Not cool.

Ultimately, when (if?) we do reach equality between genders and races, it will be ok to call everyone names and torture everyone without icky connotations getting in the way, but in the meantime, people have every right to criticize something for reinforcing the power structure that has been oppressing one half of humanity for thousands of years.

I mean, so it is not okay to have women (or PoC) being tortured in fiction but it is okay to torture white man? Because that is bad for real life equality? How exactly?

Doesn't it hinder equality, when we are not able to present female characters in every role (in fiction)?

Did you even read what I wrote? I said until we reach true equality, we can't have underprivileged people being tortured and insulted without unfortunate connotations being there, and people have a right to call them out. Did I say we should forcibly stop everyone from ever writing anything like that at the moment? No.

I'd say letting women be villains, weak, tortured, evil- in non-gratuitous ways- is a step forward.

Okay, I can see how there are unfortunate connotations it's just underprivilegded people getting tortured/insulted/etc., but if there's "equal torture for everyone"? Why are there unfortunate connotations?

Because personally it would me make uncomfortable if only men were abused and it would make me uncomfortable if only women were abused.

I didn't say anything about portraying torture of women/poc as negative. I said people have the right to criticize it. This doesn't mean nobody should write anything that might be considered problematic. Writers should write what they want, and people should be allowed to take issue with those writers' works. I think this exchange ultimately leads to finding ways of treating women/poc characters who have bad things happen to them or are villains or whatever, and have it not be about their race or gender, but their character. If everybody stops going OMG CENSORSHIP 1984 INQUISITION everytime someone criticizes a show or book for being sexist or racist or whatever, that is.

So, I am sorry I misunderstood you. I actually agree that it is not only a good thing to criticise things that seem problematic, but that it is also possible to enjoy something that you criticise.

But I think even today it is possible to write women/PoC having bad things happen to them in a way which is (mostly) not offensive. Then again, it is possible to find things to criticise everywhere.

Unfortunate things happen to men and women on the show... I have wtf moments when stuff like Meg and Ruby being tortured happens, and I have wtf moments when the boys are sexually harassed (Gert, anyone? Or Meg? Yikes) and it's made into a joke. Neither of those situations is cool, but I don't see people flipping shit over the bad shit that happens to guys anywhere NEAR as much as I hear people complain about the use of "bitch", which in my personal opinion is a lot less disturbing than some other things that have happened on the show to men and women.

It's not a "which is worse' situation to me, it's an 'all of the above are bad' thing.
