So... not every woman has to believe that men and women should be equal? It's not as though being sensible is required by law or anything, if you want to believe that men are more deserving of having the right to use sexualised slurs against one half of the population, by all means, go forth and make an ass of yourself. Just don't expect anyone to cheer you on, moron, and yes, expect to be called out on it.

Calling someone a bitch is not the same as calling someone a dick. And no, calling someone a dick is also not the same as calling someone a cunt. Learn you some differences in connotation.

Not completely related to the secret but I feel like I have to say--you can not be too bothered by sexist language in certain contexts (or I guess any contexts) and still be feminist. It's just I think the term feminist basically means you think women and men are equal, with a lot of disagreement inside that. I just hate to think of people declaring themselves not feminist just because they don't have a certain reaction somebody else tells them a feminist would have.

I mean, I think there's some obvious dealbreakers. You can't be totally misogynist and then claim you're feminist too. But nobody's feminist cred rests on being offended by Dean saying bitch in an SPN episode. Sometimes feminists like problematic things, just like anyone else. (But dude, calling a guy a dick is not the same thing. That's just a silly argument to make.)

(Anonymous) 2011-03-04 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, I don't really understand why some feminists see things in such black-and-white terms. I really don't understand when they scream misogyny just because the word bitch is used. First of all, some people are bitches and second more often than not that term is used in reference to demons doing evil things not human women.

I also don't get when people are okay with men getting tortured, but not okay with women being tortured. It's a double standard and just ridiculous. And while I do agree that the fans can be harsh on the female actors on the show, I honestly think the male actors on the show are way more objectified than their female costars.

No, but...everyone does have to be a feminist. Or at least they should be--it's about believe in equality. As I always say, it's a bit of a misnomer and I prefer the word "equalist," but...still. That doesn't change the meaning. I do think people in many fandoms are oversensitive because they like to nitpick and start wank, and there are often double standards, but the way you phrased this kinda...doesn't make it feel reasonable at all.

Being a feminist means believing that men and women are equal. Not necessarily the same, of course there are going to be differences, but equal. Meaning, a woman deserves to get paid as much as a man for doing the same job. A woman applying for a job deserves the same consideration as a man applying for the same job if they have the same credentials and merit. Your average woman is as intelligent and capable as your average man. If you don't believe that, then you hold bigoted and misogynist ideas. If you do, you are a feminist. Being a feminist does not mean you hate men or that you can't be happy in a typically feminine role. It doesn't mean believing that women and men are absolutely, exactly the same. Equal is not the same as identical.

Besides that, calling a man a dick or a bastard does not have the same connotation as calling a woman a cunt or a bitch. Words associated with men are not also associated with centuries of men being oppressed. The words might seem equivalent on the surface, but all words have history and meaning that strongly affect their meaning. Failing to take those differences into account is ignoring social cues and social history.

THE CLUE IS IN 'FEMINISTS'

(Anonymous) 2011-03-04 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
More specifically, in ' and '.

How is it equality when they scream and go all CAPSLOCK on words like 'bitch' but two posts later are calling men all the names under the sun. The same 'feminists' go into CAPSLOCK mode when a women's tortured, but think that a guy being tortured is hot.

Either both sexes get insulted, tortured, etc. or neither does.

Personally, I call a spade a spade: if the woman's a bitch, I'll call her a bitch. If the guy's a dick, I'll call him a dick. The torture scenes make me unconfortable, whether it's Sam or Meg being tortured.

A 'feminist' is a feminist who wants the women to be free of isults and "offensive" words, while continuing to insult men using the equivilent.

(Not using my lj name because I don't want an inbox of flames.)

Can I interject here? I was planning on writing something formal about this in my journal, but I'll give a taste here.

SPN is sexist. It it, as all television shows I've seen are. It kills female characters left and right to appease the vocal minority. The series started with the fridging of two women. This is problematic, and the show needs to let more women live for a good long while.

However, I would never describe it as misogynistic as I've seen a great many people call it. If it was, we never would have got the female characters we've had. Anna falling to feel emotions and have an agency and being a top garrison leader never would have happened. Lilith wouldn't be the most powerful demon. Jo and Ellen wouldn't have been such bosses, who died for a cause they believed in, going out like the heroes they were. Ruby wouldn't have WON, and been made to have a body without a present host, erasing consent issues (thank you Sera Gamble). Mary wouldn't have got such an excellent amount of agency despite being dead before the show even starts, and Jessica would have just faded into the background instead of being a constant presence on the show. All of these women are strong characters (and others who I haven't mentioned).

SPN also does a subtle deconstruction in terms of male gender as well. Dean is constantly being shown as unstable, and part of that is the purely masculine facade he puts on. Men are allowed to cry and show emotions on this show, and the societal role of being 'the protector' of the ones you love, self-sacrifice included, only destroys.

The show is certainly not perfect, and there's no harm in discussing something you find offensive or off-putting. SPN DOES have faults with their female characters treatment (and minorities and queer representation, no matter how sure I am that Dean is coded as bi), and people are allowed to talk about it, but can still enjoy the show. Simple as that.

I'm a feminist, and I have no problem with the word "bitch." I use it for males and females alike, and though I know all of the arguments that it's a gendered term no matter what, it honestly doesn't bother me.

Besides which, there are a LOT more important things that feminists in the United States should be concerned about, in my opinion. Such as, I don't know, the bill that they're attempting to pass in Georgia that says women can be given the death penalty for miscarriages. Or how about the bill that they tried to pass that would label rape victims as "accusers" rather than "victims?" If someone is offended by the word "bitch," well, it's not my place to tell them that they shouldn't be, but I just think that -- as far as women's rights -- there are many more important things that we should be fighting than Sam or Dean calling someone that's trying to kill them a "bitch."

[identity profile] fearless-rabbit.livejournal.com 2011-03-05 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't watch this show and I'm really very sick of hearing about it, but having characters do sexist (or any other category of -ist) things does not necessarily make the writer or the story sexist. You can even use -ist characters to make a point about the -ism, although I don't think Supernatural is doing that.

And there are no real requirements for being a feminist besides believing that gender doesn't affect the worth of a person, and shouldn't determine how society treats them. One can hold these beliefs without necessarily being very politically active, or wanting to read very deep into the media they consume. It doesn't mean accepting problematic stuff without question is a good thing, but by the most common definition, I'd be worried if you and your fandom friends WEREN'T feminists.

[identity profile] swaggerdoodle.livejournal.com 2011-03-05 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I stopped calling myself a feminist awhile ago. I do think the show is horribly sexist and Sam and Dean were just Kripke's Gary Stu wet dreams but I've found I'm more of an equalist. Which is actually what the definition of feminism is but you wouldn't really get that from most feminists. If a guy is going to call me a bitch then I'll have no problem exercising my equal rights and punch him in the face. *shrug*
