I totally agree OP. And guess what? There's a very great possibility it is canon, because the "SE said they're not the same person" is a rumour, not fact. There is NO SOURCE. =)

Funnily enough I find the Rinoa=Ultimecia thing extremely romantic.

Isn't it? I'd heard it was confirmed to be not-canon. (We have one of those in my own fandom - a popular fan theory that, every time it comes up, someone says it was confirmed by the developed to be wrong but when asked for a source no one can provide one. I have a suspicion that there isn't one; they never did, because it would be more interesting to leave the fans guessing. It would be very cool if this was the case with FFVIII as well.)

Alrighty, I went searching and finally found this supposed "Word of God" proof that Rinoa is not Ultimecia. It's a passage in the FFVIII Ultimania about Sorcesses, in particular the line:

"A Sorceress's lifespan is the same as a normal human's, however they cannot die until they have passed on their power to the next Sorceress."

Since Ultimecia lived "many generations" in the future, Rinoa cannot be Ultimecia because her lifespan is the same as a normal human's, say the theory's detractors.

Seriously, guys? That's it? That's not "SE confirms that Rinoa is not Ultimecia" at all. Not only does it leave the door wide open in the same statement to imagine Rinoa living a prolonged life because she refuses to give up her powers, but we can easily imagine that her natural life was put in stasis in the Sorceress' Memorial, and we have concrete proof that Sorceresses are capable of time travel.

Wow, this theory's detractors are really full of it. It's exactly the same as in my fandom.

I think the reference was fake because I heard that the statement came from someone who had a friend in SE who said it wasn't true. But apparently when asked again he didn't confirm.

But Rinoa never gave up her powers, which means that she could live for a very, very long time. If anything that quote kind of proves that Rinoa is immortal, I thought, unless I've forgotten something important from the game. Especially since we know that Edea said that a sorceress gives up her powers when a sorceress dies, and Rinoa's not dead.

That's what I think. RPGs often leave certain aspects of storylines deliberately ambiguous so the player has some control over the journey.

I figure they invented the "SE said so!" justification because of how emotionally invested they are in a bright and happy interpretation of the story. I mean you can see this by the vehemence of some of the comments in this very thread. That way that this is "canon" becomes viral, and you have people believing it - as I did - without question.

I'm in the Atlus and Call of Duty fandoms, but this was refering to CoD specifically - in one game we (think) we see a character die, but in the sequel there's a masked character with the same VA, same speech mannerisms, same fighting style, same role, etc. Detractors of the theory that it's the same person who somehow survived claim Word of God proof from the developer, but no source is ever provided for it. As with the R=U theory, they get really pissy about it because it makes for a rather different interpretation of the game's ending, one they don't like.

Pretty much and I get the feeling people assume that those of us that believe the theory hate Rinoa, when in fact some of us actually like her and think this is an important aspect to her development as a character.

Oh I see - sounds like Tron Legacy! I thought perhaps you were in Dissidia fandom (I've seen you around but I can't remember where) and you were referring to some wank that happened over at the comm about the ambiguous 'memory loss' part of the storyline. Because the exact rules of memory loss in the Dissidia universe isn't clear, several people have different theories on the matter and someone at the comm apparently was getting the shits because he was adamant his theory was correct. Something like that, I can't quote directly cuz I missed that wank.

I... wasn't the biggest fan of Rinoa in the original game, but that's because she didn't seem like she fit the story, aside from being Squall's love interest - aside from assisting his character development, it didn't feel like she really had a place of her own. If she's Ultimecia, not only does she have a place, that place is huge. I'd much prefer it.

Oh I float around all vg fandoms to an extent - I'm still tangentally involved in FF RPs and whatnot. In the case of the CoD fandom, the character in question was a fan favourite and his death hit people pretty hard. I think those that dislike the theory have moved on to the acceptance stage and it's painful to see the rest of us stuck in denial ;p
