Oh wow, I remember reading all the theories that she was. It was very interesting to see there was so much good proof for it, though the creators denied it.

I wish I could find more FF theories similar to this... it's fun to read things like that.

I just wanna say that I love that you used that picture! It's making me all nostalgic! :) I can still recite the entire dialogue before the boss battle because at first I was too shitty to beat the game for a long time (hey, I was young!), and then me and my friends would have contests who would beat it fastest.

Oh, FFVIII. So many secrets being about whether it's any good or not.

Plot left me hanging after kinda promising start, and Rinoa=Ultimecia (if intended by authors) might partially fix this situation. I found Rinoa cute; the kind who keeps plot going and dresses up fabulously, but her taste with men is so questionable I wouldn't count on her better judgement. With anagram(s?) and otherwise well handled production values (music and graphics were enjoyable, up to the certain point that damn adjustable magic system too) you'd think the whole thing could be intended to be complex or meaningful. Though I personally still prefer to reside in the Squall is dead (http://squallsdead.com/) camp. It would resonate nicely with certain other Final Fantasy game storylines.

It's not because I hate Rinoa, in fact I adore her, but so much of the game is way more interesting if you assume R=U is true. It all fits together so well! It doesn't matter to me what Square has to say about it, I'll believe whatever I like because filling in the blanks yourself makes it so much more fun.

I'm not sure it would make the story any less contrived than it was otherwise. Sure, the characters are fun (even if I kept yelling at Squall to shut up for a good part of the third disk). But... there's really nothing in the game itself that supports the idea that Ultimecia and Rinoa are one and the same, other than being sorceress and having wings. What else is there?

The theory does lend a wonderful, much more twisted measure to it. I've never been able to completely discount the theory just because of that. Not to mention that with that in place it can at least try to make some GD sense. Srsly, wtf was Square smoking? (This coming from someone who loves this game despite its complete wtf plot.)

This was my first Final Fantasy and I still love it to bits, nonsense plot and all. Kid!me wanted to be Rinoa, trufax. I wonder if any interesting fic has come out of the Rinultimecia theory?

for the record I love FF8 to death, warts and all. It's messy plot aside, the world was my favourite thing ever - I loved the real sense of a world at war, and the wonderfully fucked up approach of using kids as weapons

I always went for the Rinoa = Ultimecia, and she's trying to compress time to that one moment of her and Squall on the Ragnarok (the one where, if my memory serves, she says something to the effect of wishing it could last forever) but she's gone all sorts of crazy over the many intervening years.

I just find it a more interesting game that way.

The R=U theory

There are things such as how whatever you name Squall's Greiver ring (which Rinoa holds) becomes the name of Ultimecia's GF later in the game. Ultimecia's castle is in the same place Squall and Rinoa said they would meet. Then there was Rinoa's line saying, "I don't want the future. I want the present to stand still. I just want to stay here with you..." and Ultimecia messes around with time compression and all that.

Of course the creators said Rinoa was not Ultimecia, but there was enough to get people wondering.

squall is dead or rinoa is ultimecia, I really dont care which one, I just wish the writers actually had the balls to get whatever it was across clearly.

I thought a ton of the plot devices in the game were amazing, especially for a love story. But the scrambled ass esoteric acid ending ruined any buildup to it all beautifully coming together. ...Im still bitter about that.

100% agreed. As soon as I heard that theory everything clicked and it made the latter half of the game intriguing rather than intolerable.

Then the creators had to go rain on my parade. Well, take your pick: either the last two disks never happened or Rinoa was Ultimecia, because otherwise the game was garbage.

I totally agree OP. And guess what? There's a very great possibility it is canon, because the "SE said they're not the same person" is a rumour, not fact. There is NO SOURCE. =)

Funnily enough I find the Rinoa=Ultimecia thing extremely romantic.

FFVIII is one of those games you have to play/finish more than a single time, to fully understand the story. But most people didn't immediately do that, and didn't understand the story because of it.

For example: I see there are people in this board who still don't understand the reason for all that crazyness with Squall at the end. However if you had played the game again, you would probably remember that, to survive Time-Compression, the person had to think in his/her connections and love for his/her friends to not be "absorbed into time"(like the characters are when they lose to Ultimecia and fall unconscious).
Therefore, Squall being the 'lone-wolf' that he is, had some problems to leave Time-Compression after Ultimecia's defeat(we see him alone in a desert, and alone in a small floating island in the middle of nowhere). But Rinoa rescues him from his solitude(and from the Compression).

Ultimecia is another great example!
The Rinoa=Ultimecia theory was created because most people at the time thought that Ultimecia came out of nowhere and had no reason or development at all as a character, believing then, that the R=U theory would resolve the problem, giving a meaning for her presence in the story(turning an uninteresting character in a more interesting one).
BUT if they had paid attention, they would see that Ultimecia didn't NEED a fabricated/theorised reason to be in the game, because she already has one:
Ultimecia was persecuted for being who and what she was, and was afraid of the "Legendary SeeD" destined to KILL her. So she decided to destroy the SeeD and gain control over her own destiny(by controling time). It's all explained in the game(Ultimecia/Edea's speech in Galbadia, and the first encounter with Ultimecia/Edea in Galbadia Garden)!
BUT the problem is... This information came from Edea's(Ultimecia at the time) mouth, and therefore, was ignored by the players. "Why" you ask? Because MANY of them didn't understand it was Ultimecia talking, and not Edea! For YEARS, players thought Edea was like Golbez, a character who turned evil but was still in control of her actions, when in truth, it was Ultimecia all along using Edea's body as an avatar.
And that's what made the fanbase think that Ultimecia came ou of nowhere and had no reason to do what she did. Because they ignored Ultimecia was Edea, and therefore, ignored the fact it was ULTIMECIA speaking in those scenes(speaking/hinting about her past, no less).

In resume: The R=U theory was created by stupid people who didn't pay attention to the story, and exists to give an explanation and a meaning to a character who already have a canonical explanation and meaning to be there.

I totally agree! And you know what? I loved Rinoa, and I loved Squall, and I loved Squall/Rinoa! I just think this adds a tragic, complex dimension to the storyline which brings it all together in a perfect, amazing way.

I don't care what Word of God says, this theory makes me like the game more, and I'm going to keep believeing in it.
