What does it mean to be a steampunk Hamlet? I mean, does that really change the story much? It doesn't sound like you mean you're just staging it that way.

Hmm Shakespeeare slash...

There's several things about this secret that just bug me and they're hard to articulate!

Oh, making Horatio a girl doesn't *remove* man-slash from Hamlet. It just removes m/m Hamlet/Horatio from Hamlet.

Although darn it, now you've got me intrigued with the idea of Horatio/Ophelia femmeslash...

[identity profile] mjisinbflo.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm confused. youre doing this to spite a fandom that might not exist?
lol if there is a fandom, i wanna see!!!
besides that, i think crossdressingwomen Horatio might me an interesting take on the character...
ext_19953: (i've frequently not been on boats)

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
too bad you missed the obvious

STILL, I WOULD BE ALL ABOUT OPHELIA/LADY!HORATIO

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, man. Firstly, the ~new modern version!Shakespeare adaptations are sooo 90s. Secondly, I know everyone and their grandma made one of these, so the point got lost, but the point in the fist place was to make some kind of conection between Shakespeare and something else that's in some way relavant (the time we live in, for example), I fail to see how steampunk setting could enrich the original work, or shed new light on it, except to give it ~cool awesome gadgets and crap.

You lost me at "steampunk". Why does everything have to be made steampunk these days? It wouldn't bother me as much if they were good steampunk adaptations, but they never are.

So, now, if/when a steampunk Hamlet, everyone's going to know it's you and dismiss you as a troll? I don't understand authors posting about their WIPs telling the fandom of their trollan. When your work actually comes out, that means they're going to know, and you're basically just shooting your own fun in the head.

Really, guys. Invest in some logic.

Steampunk Hamlet? What, you mean like the Kenneth Branagh version?

Also, I ship Horatio/Fortinbras. BOO YA.

That seems a long way to go to drive hypothetical people away from your hypothetical fandom. Did slashers piss in your oatmeal or something? Why do you care who reads your books?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Your'e doing it to spite the slash shippers.

Hmm. Right. I see. Okay. You're doing it for exactly the wrong reason...why? You wish to justify a femmeslash canon ship or something? You wish to not have slash at all in it? Or...you genuinely just want to anger thousands of people who want to ship two guys?

That's...superficial. And fucking stupid. Your book might end up great, your fanbase may be loyal..but doing something just to spite someone els is the WRONG REASON to do ANYTHING. PERIOD.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Horatio's been made female countless times. People ship it anyway.

Don't worry, anon. In my head!canon of your production, fem!Horatio would secretly be a man who was pretending to be a woman crossdressing as a man in order to win Hamlet's affections, by letting only him in on the "secret".

They have gay sex anyway. Oh no!

A) steampunk hamlet is FUCKING STUPID and no one will watch/read your... thing
B) hamlet/horatio is in the original! seriously there is lots of subtext that billy put in there on purpose, it's not like slashers are making this up completely. so... way to remove an element of the original for no real reason? lol
shinsengumi: mushishi: ginko (AXEL ► a+ motherfucker;)

[personal profile] shinsengumi 2011-03-17 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, crossdressing and interesting sexual ramifications, in my Shakespeare? What a shocker. Certainly never happened before.

[identity profile] shy-nerthuserce.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I kinda like the idea...just saying...

[identity profile] xerxes92.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still convinced Horatio is a figment of Hamlet's imagination...

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I would so watch that. Especially if fem!Horatio/Ophelia was canon lol

[identity profile] siriuslynow.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I think there is enough steampunk!Hamlet in this world to last a lifetime tbh.

Pretty confident of you to spite members of a fandom you may never have.

[identity profile] ioanite.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You have NO idea how much I've wanted to see a version of Hamlet where Horatio was a woman (crossdressing or no). Go for it, anon!

(Out of curiosity, would she still be Horatio, or would she be known as Horatia/some female name?)
