You lost me at "steampunk". Why does everything have to be made steampunk these days? It wouldn't bother me as much if they were good steampunk adaptations, but they never are.

And nobody seems to agree on just what "steampunk" even IS. Victorian setting with period-appropriate SF elements? Or people in weird Final Fantasy costumes running around killing zombies with laser guns and crap? whaaaaat?!

It's anything with gears, airships, flight goggles, and waistcoats, it seems.

I wonder if the steampunk genre isn't so shallow because the "canon" so to speak - The Difference Engine - was so uninspired and awful.

Hey, don't boil steampunk canon down to 'The Difference Engine'-- before 'steampunk' was ever a term, there were elements of what would become steampunk.

Jules Verne, HG Wells, 'La Voyage a la Lune'... there's a foundation that predates Gibson.
