For me tumblr is about getting my fandom news quickly and easily sharing photos/fics/videos. Making connections is harder than on lj, but it's still possible.

Tumblr is where I post graphics and reblog Twin Peaks screencaps. Overall, I find it to be an impersonal site. And the only person who really talks to me there is a delightful anon.

I feel a lack of personal connection on it too.
And it is really difficult to carry on a conversation there. I don't like how nothing gets discussed and sometimes I would enjoy discussing things.

Like most other people here I'm in it for the pics. I do feel old and left out watching other people interact there, though. There are so many posts about their Tumblr obsession, how they sit there all day and don't want to go to bed and I can only go 'wat?'

I tend to keep the flows I like as RSS feeds and stay away from the site. It takes forever catching up on the dashboard.

To be honest, I barely get it, either. It just seems so....non-personal, and I always feel so detached from everyone else on there. I never really have anything interesting to post, and even the other people there who I know from elsewhere, I have such a hard time communicating with. The whole site just feels gimmicky and useless.

.....so then why do I have it open in another tab constantly, and keep refreshing it every few seconds? I can't get enough.....despite the fact that it makes me feel so confused.

I totally agree with it being impersonal. It took me a while to learn as well
But I think you have to look at it like consciousness vomit. That is to say that people post anything and everything they see there because they can. It's a lot like twitter or facebook statuses in the way that people can just be like "I saw a bird today" even if no one gives to figs about them seeing a bird. In Tumblr's case though you can put up pretty pictures or videos or whatever to illustrate your point. It's really an interesting beast to me and I'm more fascinated by how people use it than what actually shows up (but that's the comm major in me).
I, personally, use LJ for more rl stuff and now save my fandom stuff for tumblr... to each their own though

I know right? I just recently got a tumblr and I don't really like it that much. LJ has such a good commenting system, not to mention communities for people to find each other easily and be able to talk about ONE common interest without having to follow the whole fandom and get all their unrelated posts.

Timely secret! I just started a tumblr about my fandom the other day (magical girl animu) but so far NO1CURR, nobody seems to have noticed it yet, and I am super lonely and disappointed because I put a lot of work into getting it ready.

I've never made an account, and probably never will. I could tell from far off that it was a pretty lonely, impersonal thing, and I don't need a 'social' service like that, because there's really no point. :|a Every now and then I go to the main website and search the tags for some fan art of my favorite characters, but that doesn't require me to have an account, so... I legit do not understand the point of having one, lol.

At first it's a very daunting site, it's so hard to grasp, and I too left it to rot for a while before coming back to try and tackle it.

Once you get a few people you know on there it gets interesting. I must point out that tumblr and LJ are not mutually exclusive, it's a different web 2.0 kinda blogsite as derpy and pretentious as that sounds.

it's not lj. It's not that personal. it's not about making connections or sharing your opinions or anything. it's an almost entirely visual thing, which is why I like it a lot but I'd never abandon lj for it.

Tumblr is often used for pictures and rapid updates on fandoms and just laughing at stupid posts.

If you want to have it be personal, you've got to make the effort. I have people on their I'd consider myself friends with. Make mosts about things going on in your life, comment on their posts. Talk to people about fandom.
