Well, fanfiction doesn't bother me as much. Slash and porny fanart is what the real problem is.

[identity profile] mjisinbflo.livejournal.com 2011-03-17 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I get why you don't like it, but it's sort of inevitable with bigger fandoms. like what everyones saying most books dont have large fandoms unless they reach HP/Twilight status, so you probably don't have to worry.
personally i'd kind of like it with my work, but to each their own

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
So, if you understand why I wouldn't want it, would you still participate in slash stuff? Just curious.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
WOAH WOAH WOAH bro, I can vaguely understand not wanting weird porn or canon-defying stuff here, but when you start saying that you don't want any slash you start teetering very precariously on the edge of the Gross Homophobic Ravine, and I think you seriously do not want to go there. What do you have against slash?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't want my characters used for someone's erotic titillations. I have nothing against homosexuals. Your labeling is just as bad as trolling.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Um I'm not the one (accidentally?) insinuating that the notion of queer characters can somehow destroy your artwork. You shouldn't say "slash" when you don't mean it; just say "porn" or whatever. :\

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, sorry. I just don't see a difference in the two.

....are you new?

Slash = exploring male/male dynamic and partnerships. it can be any rating from the most mild of G to the most hardcore of NC-17, as what defines slash is the homosexual relationship, not the deep dicking.

porn = most of the time, porn = sex.

So yeah, you're either playing dumb, or you really are a homophobic ass. Either way, I don't think that you should worry so much about people creating a fandom around your work since I find it deeply doubtful that you'll ever even be published.

uh.... slash is any sort of story that explores relationships between queer individuals and porn is... porn? There's a bit of a world of difference going on there, so you should be careful with the terms you use, it might sound way more offensive than you're trying to be.

You didn't say you don't want your characters used for someone's gay erotic titillations, though. Does that mean incredibly porny het is a go, then?

[identity profile] kiraya.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I have nothing against homosexuals.

oh

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Absolutely.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, there you have it. Is really only offended by slash and porn.

Go away, you're boring.

(And most likely, your novel is, too.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeesh. First off, is that wrong? I mean, you probably don't know this, but novel writers get really involved with their characters. They make them, in essence. Imagine someone corrupting something you made. Second, don't be so angry about it.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Different anon; I'm a hobby-writer who is developing a novel right now and I know what you mean. However, the idea of someone "corrupting" (or just playing with) something I made doesn't upset me in the least. After all, since I am so intricately aware of how artificial my characters are, and how they are in fact something that I made, who is to say that someone else can't just as easily remake them? I find it much less creepy than trying to "corrupt" a real person (which is itself a very viable- and fun!- fandom)

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, "easily remake" is a lot different than what I see here and in other fandoms themselves. Especially when it comes to smut.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know... I've written fanfic before, and I've found that it's an amazing experience that lets me really understand the original author's craft and come to appreciate her/him and her/his characters so much more. It's really not a bad thing at all, OP!

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never read a piece of fanfiction that could even come close to being like that. Never.

First of all, look up Rule 34.
Humans like porn.
They always have.
Maybe YOU don't, but you don't get to tell people who read your book not to imagine them doing things that you don't want them to do. You put it out there, you can't control what they think.
And when you've created a character they identify with, they are going to imagine them having sex. They are going to imagine themselves having sex with them. They are going to imagine them having sex with another person in 'your' universe, because that's the way humans work. People were reading Romeo and Juliet and imagining what happened on their wedding night after Wills had it fade to black. They were imagining the hot hatesex that Petruccio and Katarina had.

And yes, guys see two atractive women and like to imagine them having sex together. And women see two attractive men and like to imagine them having sex together. YOU CAN'T STOP THIS.

Now, if you like, you can publish with the caveat that you do not want fanfiction created for the series. Hopefully they will comply. BUT YOU CAN'T stop them thinking this. And yeah, probably writing it down and sharing it. Because you don't get to tell people what to do with the characters who come alive in their mind. Because they read it with the filter of their own personal experiences, and those characters in their mind are now THEIR PERSONAL INTERPRETATION of 'your' characters. The best solution for you is to not publish your work, so that your beautiful characters can stay pristine and non-sexual just the way you like them.

And yes, your issue is with slash. Protest all you like, but I think you and I both know that you are offended by homosexualty. And for that, I judge you.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-17 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
See above. I got slash and shipping confused.
Secondly, you shouldn't bring up Rule 34 because that's all about how WRONG and FUCKED UP fandom members are. It proves my points.
Thirdly, not everyone imagines characters having sex. In fact, I'd bet the majority of people don't.
Your points are all messed up.

Oh, sweetie, you really are just too precious for words!

SHOW OF HANDS: HOW MANY OF US REGULARLY IMAGINE THE CHARACTERS OF MOVIES/NOVELS/GAMES HAVING SEX?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Since our OP thinks that the majority of people don't.
And did you do it before you discovered fanfiction?

Personally, I was imagining Han and Leia doing it in 1980.

*raises hand* And yes long before I discovered fanfiction. Can't say who my first was but yes, I do it.

Yes and yes.
I'm starting to think OP is really young. Or just trolling.

Your sample size is bad. Of course everyone who frequents this site imagines character sex.
