I've never seen HMS Pinafore buuuut.....

PIRATES OF PENZANCE SECRET!!!

It was the first musical I was ever in.

One of the first plays I ever saw. I grew up listening to my dad talk about both of them, and I finally got to see the Pirates of Penzance when I was in 9th grade. During "With Cat-like Tread", the players grabbed some black hats and did this little bit of choreography reminiscent of Bob Fosse.

OH MY GOD IT'S A MOTHERFUCKING GILBERT AND SULLIVAN SECRET. OP WILL YOU MARRY ME?

It is my opinion that any opinion whatsoever about Gilbert and Sullivan is valid, because one could never come up with an interpretation of the shows that is more ridiculous than the shows themselves.

It just feels like the plays go hand-in-hand. The maritime themes, the ineffective military, etc etc. Thematically, it's just...you know! One thing that I realized about HMS Pinafore is that, ultimately, Josephine decides what happens even with all the men in her life desperately trying to control what she wants.

That totally makes sense! But then, most of them have pretty similar themes.... for instance, today I was telling my friend about the show that my school's G+S society has picked for next year, and did so entirely in quotations from this year's show. :P

I'd call it a tie between "Modern Major General" and "A British Tar", but I also have a soft spot for "When I was a Lad" and "When a Felon's Not Engaged in His Employment"

Now let me ask you something - how do feel about The Mikado? I feel like a horrifically bad G+S fan for not really liking it that much, but still faffing all over Pirates and Pinafore. Still, it seems like I'm not alone.

No seriously though OP, I have a theory that the pirates in Hamlet (yes, really) are totally the Pirates of Penzance, and when they pick him up he's all "no look you have to help me, I'm an orphan- okay well half an orphan, but does that count" and they're all "YES CLEARLY WE MUST HELP YOU T_T" and, uh, yes.

...So you're probably fine. XD

This really just came about because last year I was in Hamlet right after being in Pirates, and my brain combines things that shouldn't go together, aaaand yeah. >_>;

YES. Yes they can. *imagines the Pirate King and company in Pericles* XD That is excellent.

I love it! Oh man, I can see it now. He probably told the pirates this when they took the ship. Roz and Guil weren't smart enough to catch-wise, so they were going on about being all, "But, but, but you're not! And we aren't either!" And that's why those two got killed.

Ahahaha, yes! Because I bet R&G have never heard of the Pirates of Penzance anyway. Or somebody told them, but they were busy having an existential crisis and forgot. XD

Bit of Pinafore geekiness on my part: if I'm singing Buttercup's last bit in Pinafore, I always change the line to, "The well-born babe was Ralph's father!" because otherwise Ralph's as old as the Captain and I think Gilbert didn't intend that.

Well, the Major General does sing he can whistle all the airs from Pinafore, so I can see it. *nods*

I don't really have any Mikado hate... except for poorly-done versions of it.

I love the Animaniacs' "HMS Yakko," too.

I think I'm in love with this secret - the fact that I agree with it makes me naughty-giggle...

*hugs*
