I really don't get the whole gamer girl thing. Maybe its because I'm not a gamer myself, but it really just doesn't strike me as that male-dominated of a hobby. Besides, most of the time the whole concept just dissolves into an arguement about what a proper "gamer girl" should be.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
What a proper "gamer girl" should be: A girl who plays video games.

But simple concepts break most people's minds.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe you're just lucky with your friends? I used to be a member of my uni's gaming club - I only ever saw like one other girl there, and there were like 40-50 male members. Of course, that might be because the club was really about competitive multiplayer gaming, and chicks might be less into that. In my entire life, outside of the internet, I have met maybe three other girls that played games - one because I introduced her to it, one that plays them generally for the story and isn't concerned with gameplay/doesn't describe herself as a gamer, and the chick from my uni videogame club.

Actually recently for a school assignment we did a poll of one of my English classes to see how many people had played games before... the majority of the girls had never played games while most of the guys had. So yeah.

That happens even with gender removed from the equation. Gamers are such a broad category infighting is rampant.

It... doesn't strike you as that male-dominated of a hobby? Really?

You're so lucky to be in the dark about this.

Actually, at least in Australia, the ratio of guys to girls who 'game' is almost 1:1. I don't know about other countries, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hard to call it male-dominated when half the people you play with are women. Based on the games I play, I wouldn't call it male-dominated either.

[identity profile] tasteoftruth.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Certainly I'd say that 'gaming culture' is male-dominated, even if the gender ratios are hardly reflective of current marketing targets.

[identity profile] lunelight.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with this completely.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-19 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Agree 100%. In my experience in the US it's *assumed* that only guys play video games, except for a select few games or game types. I get ignored in video game store or get asked if I'm buying for someone so often that I only buy online now, commercials and covers for games skew for men, etc, even though I wouldn't be surprised if the ratio on most genres of games are 50-50 or close to it. The online gaming culture actively trashes women and female players, and even fairly gender neutral games and publishers like Atlus tend to include extras like posters featuring half-naked women.

I have no clue who the woman in the secret is and don't really care if she does or doesn't play video games. I don't doubt there are girls who play or claim they play "for the attention" - especially with the recent fetishizing of 8-bit gaming, it's easy and sometimes socially beneficial to feign an interest in old-school gaming. But maybe, because I never saw much of an upside to being female and liking video games, I don't understand why anyone would. I assume anyone who's playing or talks about playing plays because they enjoy it, and I think ALL kinds of gamers are about equally annoying if it isn't your area of interest.

I agree with this completely. I work in a gaming store, and I get so many guys surprised I work there, asking me if I really know my stuff, etc. I've even have a few ask if I can get my male co-workers to answer their questions instead.

[identity profile] hoopyfroodyford.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's as male-dominated as you think, I think girls are just less likely to talk about it or admit to it, even. Mostly because the second a girl says she plays video games, she'll get labeled as a gamer-girl only in it to seek attention.

I'm not much of a gamer but this is what I've noticed from the sidelines.

[identity profile] christ-chexx-4u.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
this! i think nowadays, theres less of a stigma about female gamers, encouraging many to come out of the woodwork. i honestly dont believe that it was, at any time, that much of a male-dominated activity, i just think that it was more culturally acceptable if you were male, leading to females keeping it on the dl.

Most of what [livejournal.com profile] judo_creature and [livejournal.com profile] relmneiko said, and then also:

While different people have different experiences when it comes to how their social circle views gaming, in many larger circles (some gaming journalism, The Internet, and a lot of mainstream media in general), it's perceived/presented as a male-dominated hobby and frequently has the misogyny to show for it. A few examples off the top of my head:

- Fat, Ugly or Slutty (http://fatuglyorslutty.com/) (trigger warnings for all sorts of sexual insults and possibly worse) chronicles user-submitted caps of harassment women have received while playing online. (A lot of these are also insults are also disparaging the recipient's looks.)

- Games with character-creation-based protagonists being marketed almost exclusively with male versions of their protagonists (Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 2 were advertised so heavily with the male versions of their main protagonists that many people who weren't following the games closely didn't even know you could play as a woman; The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been falling into the same trap).

- The Spike Video Game Awards (http://borderhouseblog.com/?p=3441), which got a fair amount of bad press last year for its reinforcement of the stereotypical 'dudebro' gaming culture.

Where the "gamer girl" label becomes problematic is when it perpetuates the idea that girls who play games are unusual/separate, which encourages both the kind of behavior seen at "Fat, Ugly, or Slutty", and the kind of behavior that the secret OP seems to be complaining about (I'm not familiar with the girl in the secret myself).

I don't get it either.

[identity profile] yuumeko.livejournal.com 2011-03-19 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
My sister took a serious survey on this through her university and you'd be surprised at the amount of answers where some girls pretty much said "girls don't play video games"

Yeah, I was horrified.
