I really don't get the whole gamer girl thing. Maybe its because I'm not a gamer myself, but it really just doesn't strike me as that male-dominated of a hobby. Besides, most of the time the whole concept just dissolves into an arguement about what a proper "gamer girl" should be.

That said, it's incredibly irritating to me. I've been playing games across most genres since 1988, and I don't feel the need to call attention to the fact I'm female OR the fact that I even play videogames until discussion prompts such.

Hell, I've been rejected for NOT being slutty and attention whoring at points. But if you need attention that bad and need to sink that low, get some help. PLEASE.

First off, I don't see why we need to distinguish a difference between female gamers and male gamers, just like how I hate the terms "hardcore" and "softcore" gamers. Gamers are gamers are gamers. If you like video games, and you play video games, you are a gamer. It doesn't matter what kind of games you play. It doesn't matter how you show your love for games. Hell, maybe you don't besides just buying or renting new games and playing them. That is perfectly fine! If you're enjoying yourself, that's all that matters.

Second off, who are you to judge her? Not gonna lie, wearing the N64 controller around her neck really isn't the life choice I'd make, but if she says she likes games, then so be it. She likes 'em. Granted, I also don't think that she should push the distinction of being a "gamer chick" hard, either, but at the same time, you shouldn't be saying, "She says she is one, so she's not a real one!!11!" And if she says she likes Zelda, then she likes Zelda. My best friend claims to be a Zelda fan, despite only playing OoT to completion. And you know, even though I've played pretty much every Zelda game to date save for the DS ones to completion, I don't think of her as any less of a fan.

Sorry for the rant, but I just hate it when people try to distinguish what "true" gamers are. Jfc, we're not a clique. There aren't any requirements that you have to meet in order to be considered a "true" gamer, or a "true" gamer chick, for that matter. And if there were, do you know what the requirements of being a "true gamer chick" would be?

1.) Have a vagina
2.) Have boobs
3.) Enjoy video games

Or, in some cases

1.) Identify as a girl
2.) Enjoy video games

Dunno who this girl is, but I agree that controller necklace is ridiculous. The sad thing is a lot of guys will pay more attention to a girl if she plays video games and is pretty active about it. They'll either suck up to them or yell at them when they play online together and the girls win. In any case if this girl is going "lol I'm a gamer gurl guys" then I'd call it a pretty lame attempt at getting attention. I'm in a few communities for female gamers but to me a gamer is a gamer. Their sex shouldn't matter, it's a hobby.

Seriously, the "gurrrrl gamer" thing bugs me to no end. If you want to be treated equally, then yeah, speak up if someone rags on your gender, but don't flaunt it like a god damn badge when it's not called for. If we are truly equal, then being a female gamer should not be a big deal.

On GameFAQs, it pissed the hell out of me to see a girl specifically put in her sig "I AM A GIRL AND I PLAY VIDEO GAMES, OK????" It was just... embarrassing. I usually don't say shit if someone calls me a "he" on there-- 99% of the time its because they assume you're a guy because the board is indeed male majority. I hate when topics are derailed because of that just to have guys either screams "GIRLS ON THE INTERNET?!" "TITS OR GTFO" or genuinely treat the girl nicer because they now know she's a chick.
