I cannot stand the girls who are number 9.

Yes. You've held a controller before. Big damn deal. Get in line with the rest of us, you attention whore.

The playing of video games should not define who you are as a person. It's a hobby, not a lifestyle.

You just put into words what i've just been trying to explain to the hordes of people berating me for my earlier comment
bravo fine sir or madam

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Being annoyed by #9 does not equal your apparent disdain for the term gamer as a whole.

[identity profile] mount-fraught.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
think about the hobby vs. lifestyle point that was brought up in the comment i was responding to

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, who says gaming can't be a hobby?

[identity profile] mount-fraught.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
it should be a hobby, sorry if i wasn't clear. gaming shouldn't be a lifestyle, generally.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
See, this is why people are berating you.

Gaming can just as easily be a hobby or a lifestyle, same as sports, music, drawing, chess, or any other non-essential thing people do to kill time. Who are you to tell total strangers that the way they're living is wrong? It's not like they're hurting anyone.

[identity profile] mount-fraught.livejournal.com 2011-03-19 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
i knew i would have this debate one day.

i am a very career-oriented person. i try hard at school because i want to be successful, get into a good college, have a cool job, and not have to live with my parents for the rest of my life playing video games in the basement a la stereotypical "gamer". sure, i wouldn't be hurting anyone. and some people would even be content with having that lifestyle. for me, it would be a veritable hell. gaming is a form of entertainment. maybe i'm thinking too existentially for the hordes of people getting on my nuts about this, but i feel that if you can't find something better for your life to revolve around than playing video games, i really, really pity you. i define myself by what i do, and my sense self-worth would be shit if i lived a "gaming lifestyle", do you understand?

I think you made yourself clear. But let me make sure this is correct: Your opinion on what people do is superior to everyone else's opinion and any opposite opinion is worthy of your pity. Correct?

[identity profile] mount-fraught.livejournal.com 2011-03-19 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
No. My opinion is my opinion, and everyone has the right to their opinion. I personally believe that living your life for video games is pitiful. Hate on me for that all you want.

[identity profile] kabuki-callgirl.livejournal.com 2011-03-19 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
So no one can have career in video games,

No one can work a ten hour full week Job and the only thing they want to do is play video games,

You can be career minded and still live for video games.

[identity profile] thethicket.livejournal.com 2011-03-19 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Meaning the playing of video games. Don't be so pedantic.

[identity profile] kabuki-callgirl.livejournal.com 2011-03-19 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Not being pedantic, I am talking about professional gamers, you know those who can earn thousands of dollars simply playing video games,

Last I checked they are very real

[identity profile] mount-fraught.livejournal.com 2011-03-19 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
name one job besides "game tester" that involves solely playing video games and doing absolutely nothing else for fifty hours a week

[identity profile] kabuki-callgirl.livejournal.com 2011-03-19 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Pro gamer. Officially a sport where people are paid thousands to sponsors companies in gaming tournaments where they can earn even more money just by, hang on, playing video games.

And yes this is a very real thing

[identity profile] mount-fraught.livejournal.com 2011-03-19 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I recognize your point, and you got me with the existence of pro gamers, however you must remember that professional gaming takes it out of the context of entertainment, invalidating it as part of the quintessential "gamer" lifestyle. In combination with the rarity of pro gamers, in my opinion, I don't feel that their existence is enough to rationalize "living for video games". Technically, pro gamers do this, but it's not realistic to spend one's life whiling away the hours on video games in the hopes of becoming a pro gamer. This ultimately all boils down to the word "gamer", which is what this whole debate began over. The vast majority of video game players are, shockingly, not professionals.

I think you said everything I said, just not as baldly. So I was correct.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-19 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
i am a very career-oriented person.

so who gives a shit?

[identity profile] mount-fraught.livejournal.com 2011-03-19 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
it justifies my reasoning, bud.
lrn2readingcomprehension

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-03-19 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I get the feeling you're looking at this as a matter of absolutes to some extent. You're very career and school-driven, and it sounds like that, for you, is a major part of your identity and your drive in life.

But a lot of people do things for school or for a living that aren't their main passion in life. For example, I know someone who works in sales. But if you talked to her and asked her who is is, she'd probably be more likely to describe herself as an artist than a salesperson. But she works hard at her job and takes some pride in it, even though it will never inspire her or give her joy like her art does. I'm working towards a degree and a career that I think I'll really like, but I wouldn't call it my identity.

I'm not really a gamer, myself, but I've never gotten the impression that you can only be a gamer if you're a stereotypical, basement-dwelling gamer. Shoot, a lot of the guys in my program, which requires a good amount of work and dedication, love to talk about the gaming they do in their spare time.

[identity profile] mount-fraught.livejournal.com 2011-03-19 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely understand what you're saying and I agree with many of the points you made. Someone can be a fan of video games without being the stereotypical basement-dweller. Case in point: myself. However, I don't think gaming really compares to your friend's job in sales. She may dislike it, and perhaps it isn't her main focus in life, but she is accomplishing work and making money to support herself, something that playing video games generally does not accomplish, with the exception of game testing and professional gaming.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-03-19 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
No, my point was that she carries on a job, and does a good job at it, while still being more passionate about her art, which she doesn't do to earn money anymore. Just like a gamer can care about games and still have non-gaming careers, go to school, etc., and just like I love writing even though it doesn't play into my career goals.

[identity profile] christ-chexx-4u.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
i knew i would have this debate one day.

gee, you knew you would have this debate when you deliberately come in with an attitude about the word gamer, to a secret aimed at gamers? my, aren't you perceptive.

[identity profile] mount-fraught.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
gee how long did it take you to think that one up?
seeing as you came into this thread a full 48 hours after everyone ceased to be interested
you're so cute

[identity profile] christ-chexx-4u.livejournal.com 2011-03-21 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
or, you know, i have a LIFE, which doesnt allow me to spend every waking moment on the internet. imagine that.
