The way I see it, impregnation is a kink in and of itself, but it's way too common in hentai to stem from that (why yes, I read a lot of it too, for a given value of "read").

In my experience, this gets brought up only in scenarios with a clearly submissive female partner (which is a majority, granted, but there's other types of hentai, too). I have always seen it as a further sign of the girl/woman's submission to the man, and as having very little (if anything) to do with actual pregnancy.

That's not really true. There are also versions of the impregnantion kink with the woman tying the man down and basically stealing his sperm against his will, or less physical versions with her lying about birth control or pushing herself on him so he can't pull out at the last moment.

Or more equal versions where they both want to have a kid and find the thought of making new life mutually erotic.

I think its commonness has more to do with the fact that it is a strongly biological kink. "Kink" isn't even the right word because it's sexual in nature to begin with, and the main biological purpose of sex. Not everyone is aroused by the thought of becoming pregnant (or making someone pregnant), but considering how many adaptations humans have as a whole to make them want sex, to make them want pregnancy itself is just as strong of an instinct for a lot of people.

First off, I agree with everything you wrote. My wording might have been poor, I'll try to phrase it better.

My point was that the instances OP mentioned (i.e. very common mentions of pregnancy in hentai) =/= actual impregnation kink or any of the examples you cited.

From what I've seen of hentai, variants of femdom are relatively common, although nowhere near as prevalent as male dom/female sub. "Milking" is also an acknowledged fetish, as is actual pregnancy kink.

However, in the vast majority of cases (not all, just most), the whole "oh nooo you'll get me pregnant" trope comes up when the girl/woman is in the submissive position (or even a victim), and the boy/man dominates her (with his mighty penis and/or inexplicable sexual prowess). Thus, it is his decision whether she'll become pregnant (let's disregard biology, this is hentai) and her body is utterly subjected to his will, not hers anymore.

This is why it always seemed to me that in most cases, it wasn't really an impregnation kink, which - as you said - is something entirely different.
