Haters always gonna hate. If not for his voice, then for his hair, clothes, car... Find me one celebrity who doesn't have a group of haters calling the celeb all kinds of names.

Most people do realize he's not gay, it's just a word they use to offend someone because they think it's cool. They do that because they are ignorant assholes.
If, however, your only problem is that random people might think you're gay, then I find it hard to care about your woe.

I think there's a difference between being worried that people will think you're gay and being worried that people will bully/mock you for being gay. I don't know how old OP is, but when I was around 12-13, if the other kids got it in their heads that you were gay, they wouldn't shut up about it for months. And that was the girls. The guys who didn't act 'masculine' enough got properly bullied, to the point where one of them had to switch to a different school.
OP is probably older than that but depending on where he lives it could still be a problem.

I am gay, as it happens, but that doesn't mean that the other girls deciding I must be cause they thought I was too touchy-feely with my friends or whatever pissed me off then and it pisses me off now.

I agree.

One of my exes told me that, in high school, he wasn't really interested in relationships or any of his female classmates. When girls would ask him out, he would politely decline. He basically told me that most of the girls he knew were immature and uninteresting (because, well, high school), and one day a girl called him out on it.

"You've, like, never gone out with a girl. I don't think you've ever had a girlfriend, and you're always hanging out with guys. Are you gay or something?"

From then on, people honestly thought he was gay. Just because he was passive! He wasn't feminine either, or what people would consider stereotypical. That's just how kids are, it seems.

Yeah their initial reasoning behind why I must be gay was that me and my BFF were close and spent all our time together. :/ Oh, and someone said they saw us holding hands.
The second time made a little more sense, because me and another friend had a joke that we were married, but for some reason some of the girls took it 100% seriously and acted like be were backtracking when we said we'd been joking around from the start.

Even at the time I wasn't bothered that they thought I was gay. I was just bothered by the stupid. xD

I agree, but the secret "sounded" a bit strange so it crossed my mind. But I left the "if" because I know fear of bullying isn't the same as fear of being mis-identified. (Which is very annoying but in my opinion not something to be feared in itself.)
ETA: Actually, I don't know why I'm tiptoeing around it, what I was trying to say is that if he's afraid of being called gay because he's homophobic, then I don't much care.
Other than that I do understand because I had my teachers call me lesbian for holding hands with a friend and it made me facepalm even if we did spend most of that day making out... :)
