Go for it!

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Good luck, OP!

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
If you have to say, "Screw you, I'm going to college!" you probably are going to be out of your element.

Have fun wasting beaucoup bucks that won't get you employment!

[identity profile] smokingguncafe.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
What are you, a philosophy major stuck working as a barista?

Dial it down, you don't know OP's financial situation, they never mention anything about the cost except for other people bitching about how expensive it is.

If she's a scientist and she in a prestigious college, she'll get employed.

[identity profile] gershwhen.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
She could learn a lot about the world, explore a ton of new ideas and learn to THINK. Those skills alone are priceless. Add to that the network, friends and opportunities and there are a LOT of options for a bright future WITH employment.

[identity profile] smokingguncafe.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Get it, gurl.

Fuck the naysayers, college is amazing and a great experience. I know it's cliche to say crap like your dreams will come true and you'll discover yourself, but college coincides with an interesting time in life. You're open to new stuff, you learn all kinds of shit, and it's a good time.

Don't ever stop lip synching to Barbra in the bathroom mirror.

[identity profile] wrestlingdog.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, I don't know how anyone could not lip synch to that song.

[identity profile] allstarzs.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Good for you<3

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I got the same feedback, too. People heard the name of the school and immediately thought I was bankrupting my parents (um, major scholarships and loans I paid back, thanks) and since I was the first person from my town ever to go there they didn't really get the whole "learning" thing.

But I went and it was fantastic. Being there gave me the confidence to be intelligent without letting that one aspect of my personality define me. I wasn't THE smart girl anymore, so I could be other things as well. At the same time, being smart was really valued and encouraged.

Go and have a great time! When they try to bring you down, just say that you're confident you can handle it and leave it at that.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I've read that going to a prestigious college really doesn't ensure you'll be any more successful than someone attending a less well-known university once you graduate. Also that it's kind of a waste of your money and that the only real reason to go is for the prestige alone

But whatever, if you're okay with lifelong debt and you really think that will make you happy, go for it

[identity profile] smokingguncafe.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the biggest factor is how much work a student is willing to put into their academic and professional careers. Success doesn't come from the school, but it can come if a student is thrilled to be working hard AT that school, even if it's the more expensive one. I honestly think that the more expensive places offer better networking opportunities and professors anyway, and they do have endowment funds because big name families have legacies and are willing to shell out. Besides, the OP never mentioned that she can't pay for it--she could have a nice scholarship.

You can do it! And as for the money problem, there are a million scholarships out there. Start looking, and apply for every one that you are vaguely qualified for. I was shocked to discover how many funds and grants get few to no applicants.

And fun fact - as soon as you get one, and can list that on your application form, the others will start coming in even faster.

No rain, anon - only congratulatory sunshine. :-)

What a great song and what a great secret. You'll have loads of fun at college, and I'm sure you'll do really well.

[identity profile] beuk.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Good luck and work hard!

[identity profile] faorism.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
God, I know how you feel. Exactly. It sucks, but at least you are happy and looking forward! That's all that really matters.

And, well... if they won't say it, I will:

FUCKING CONGRATULATIONS, ANON, FOR GETTING INTO YOUR AMAZING PRETESTIGIOUS SCHOOL. YOU HAVE (BASICALLY) ALL OF F_S SUPPORTING YOU AND YOUR DECISION, AND I AT THE VERY LEAST AM SO EXCITED FOR YOU. GOOD LUCK IN ALL YOUR ENDEAVORS. And I expect you to post another secret in exactly one year saying that going was the best decision you've made. AND THEN WE WILL CELEBRATE YOUR WIN AT LIFE.

Go for it, no matter what they say! I'm in a similar situation, I'll be up to my ears in debt when I'm done with my studies at a university abroad, but you got to follow you dreams bro. So go to that college and make us proud! Good luck OP!

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Babs is pretty inspirational. While I hope you don't dig yourself into a huge hole of debt, best of luck on your future studies.

[identity profile] courageousyouth.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Go for it, dude. I had a lot of people say the same thing to me, and I've done fine thus far. I'm going to be in debt my whole life, might as well do what I want.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-26 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here, just wanted to thank you guys for the support. :D I hope I wasn't being a drama llama with my secret.

[identity profile] wrestlingdog.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Congrats and give 'em hell! Great song, too.

[identity profile] clodia-risa.livejournal.com 2011-03-26 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations! And remember: "Haters to the left."

[identity profile] erethesunrises.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations! And I feel you so, so much. I'm going to a prestigious school in Washington DC and I know I'm going to have loans to pay back once I graduate and for a while I was considering transferring for these reasons but I am so happy here and doing well and thriving and I've learned so much and there are so many opportunities here and I've realized all that is so much more important to me and way too much to ever pass up.

Go for it, anon. You can do it. ♥

[identity profile] valenciapilgrim.livejournal.com 2011-03-27 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
I am glad that you are so resolved, OP! Honestly, you shouldn’t take the remarks personally. I’m at a place in my life where I watch myself really carefully, because I realized that whenever I felt a little bit jealous or intimidated of something someone else did, I would tear them down a little bit, instead of just smiling and saying “good for you!” And afterwards I would realized what I did, and feel like such a jerk! Debbie Downer should not be anyone’s role model.

If you were accepted to the college, then you were judged to be qualified by the people who actually know what in the hell they are talking about. If someone says “Oh, I’ve heard that college is challenging, I hope you’re ready to apply yourself!” Then you should pay attention. If someone says “College debt is no joke, I hope you make a real effort to be fiscally responsible!” then you should listen to them. Otherwise, forget em. But again, don’t take it personally. People will be trying to tell you how to live your life for as long as you are alive. Or as Jack Johnson said (sang) “everybody thinks /That everybody knows/ About everybody else /Nobody knows/ Anything about themselves/ Cause they're all worried about everybody else.”
