Well, I've read that going to a prestigious college really doesn't ensure you'll be any more successful than someone attending a less well-known university once you graduate. Also that it's kind of a waste of your money and that the only real reason to go is for the prestige alone

But whatever, if you're okay with lifelong debt and you really think that will make you happy, go for it

I think the biggest factor is how much work a student is willing to put into their academic and professional careers. Success doesn't come from the school, but it can come if a student is thrilled to be working hard AT that school, even if it's the more expensive one. I honestly think that the more expensive places offer better networking opportunities and professors anyway, and they do have endowment funds because big name families have legacies and are willing to shell out. Besides, the OP never mentioned that she can't pay for it--she could have a nice scholarship.

I guess there are better opportunities for networking at more prestigious universities, but it's definitely not a given, and it's a huge risk given the cost. I guess OP could have a scholarship but from the wording of the secret it kind of sounds like they're paying for it themselves (otherwise I don't get why they brought up the fact that they were "discouraged" when friends mentioned the cost issue)

Also I guess I'm just annoyed at this idea that you have to go to a "good" college to be successful. My uncle is an engineer that works for NASA and he's pretty well-off financially, despite having an undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee (which is alright but definitely not a "big name" unless you're talking about football or something)

The OP never says ANYTHING even close to "you have to go to a "good" college to be successful." That's your issue that you clearly haven't dealt with.

Lots of people have lifelong debt from attending less well-known universities as well...

Well, in this case I'm saying that maybe it's better to go to a CHEAPER, less "prestigious" university than the big-name (ie. expensive) university. And yes, I have debt from college, but it's $20,000 to pay off (and that was 5 years worth of college), as opposed to some people I know who pay more than that to attend college for one year.

Look at it this way, you can buy a Rolls Royce or pay less for a Volkwagen. In the long run, both are cars that will get you where you need to go.

OP here. I see what you are saying, and it would work for me, only the major that I have chosen isn't offered by a whole lot of schools, and I'm choosing the college for the networking opportunities and the classes rather than the prestige (it's a good school, but it isn't a famous school like Harvard or anything).

Just wanted to clear that up. :)

If you're doing this to do some sort of film thing? Seriously. Forget it. You're better off majoring in something that will get you a good-paying job to afford your films and actually work on your own stuff yourself.

The so-called "networking" isn't guaranteed, and everyone is out for themselves in the classes. Unless you are absolutely the professor's favorite, bye-bye networking!

I speak from experience.

You know, you don't have to be a film major to need good networking. To get any great job, you need the right networking and opportunities presented to you.

Ignoring the naysayers, I say, follow your dreams. Just make sure you have a plan and are practical while doing so. Good luck to you, love.
