Since you've met this person, are they gender varient in anyway?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
You took the words out of my mouth. I'm MtF transgendered, and long before I came out to anyone IRL I made all of my online profiles female. It was sort of a way to test the waters, as it were.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That's where the problem comes in. I think he's male. His best friend, who's known him for decades and is how I met him, said he's a guy with a lady psuedonym.

It's so easy online to say he's a female and have people defend him for this reason. Even though the list says, tell people if someone just has a feminine name but is actually male. His persona he uses for publishing is female.

The reason it started to bother me is I talked to a guy with a lady-like name and he said people treated him better when they thought he was a woman because of the male-dominated fandom. They were more kind and gave compliments more freely. Then they found out he was really a man and stopped talking to him.

I'm not going to say anything I really just wanted to hear what other people thought.

[identity profile] oberongeiger.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Why ISN'T it your place to tell the rest of the fandom that they're holding this person up as an icon of female creatorship when this person, y'know, isn't that at all?

[identity profile] glansbilde.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe because she doesn't actually know the genderidentity of this person? She's met them in person, yeaa, but she will never know wether they're really trans. My first account on lj was as a woman because I was uncertain about my genderidentity and it made it possible for me to try it out in a safe setting. You can never know for sure what someone identifies as.

[identity profile] oberongeiger.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That's actually a great point that hadn't occurred to me.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
well, the OP made a reply on the first comment saying that they have it from the guy's closest friend that he's a regular guy who just uses a female name so people will be nicer

[identity profile] glansbilde.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
First of all; No, OP never said that the friend said anything about being treated nicer. Op simply said that this persons best friend said he was a "guy with a lady pseudonym" not the REASON why he did it.

Also; That doesn't say much. The only trans guy I ever really knew didn't come out to anyone, including his best friend, until his twenties and often claimed to just "like dressing like a dude, lol" before that.

I don't see how it could matter that much. Who you are online is just a profile, and maybe they just want to be free of who they are irl? I don't know. I'd just let them be. Their online profile isn't their real life profile.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Man (lol pun), I'd do the same thing in the world of lj. Admitting to boyhood here condemns you to e-treatment of either sneering dismissal or slavering simpery, with no in-betweens.

Back in my gen video game fandom days you'd better believe I was a dude, for similar reasons.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen this too. Gay men in fandom can usually escape the sneering/fawning, though.

Basically, if you want to be accepted in LJ fandom, you have to like the cock. It's a law.

[identity profile] tunafish.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally agree with this.

I used to pretend I was a guy when I frequented forums just cause they treated women poorly. I often see guys getting labeled as creepers for no apparent reason if they reveal themselves on LJ.

See, in this case the reason it's annoying is this fandom is predominately male. The reason the list of female creators exists is to show that females exist in the community.

Hmmm...well to be honest in that case this comes off as attention whoring.

I can see why you're annoyed. It's just perpetuating that whole "NO GIRLS ON THE INTERNET" thing

... that seems like a weird list to make. Especially on internets, where this kind of thing is particularly easy to hide or misrepresent or keep mum about.

It sounds like something ripe for exactly this situation.

Nekamas are pretty common in all sorts of places..

[identity profile] sliefoxx.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, nothing about transgenders yet?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
If I were you, I'd blackmail them for cookies. Or ice cream. Or other tasty snacks.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Cookies. That is a wonderful idea.

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I like your style.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
While that can be annoying, I think you should look the other way. While you may have an idea why they're doing it, and it's something you disapprove of, you're still not 100% sure why they're doing it. And then of course there are the after effects to think about; will it do more harm than good to expose them?

If you really feel strongly about this, maybe discuss it with someone who knows what you know? Just make sure you don't start a war or anything.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
dear z. budapest -

get out of fandom.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, I wonder if he thinks that somehow being female will make it easier to get kudos in that particular area -- if he's not actually MtF. I usually hang in female oriented places where people out and out assume you are female unless you make it clear you are otherwise, but I've heard of places where it was the other way around.
