Well... think about it. You're not restricted in being able to walk up and down stairs, you can open doors easily. You don't get strange looks because you're in a wheelchair.

Yeah, we take those for granted. Not everyone is so lucky. You don't need to feel guilty about it; just be aware of it.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I know it exists but it's not my 'privilege'. I was born this way, I can't help that and something can happen that will take my 'privilege' away. I'm not going to suddenly say that everyone who is able bodied has a privilege that I don't. That's just the way shit works.

I wouldn't be so testy about this if it didn't sound like I'm supposed to be guilty for it.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
No, look. It is a privilege. I am an ESL, so the word used to rub me the wrong way as well, but think of it as a pure antonym to "unprivileged". If become disabled, like I did, you know that your old self had a privilege that your new self does not; in my case, not being in pain every day. How often do you wake up and thing, "God, no agony, what a brilliant day!" Probably never, unless you are recovering from toothache or something.

So, whether you say it or not, if you are able-bodied, you have able-bodied privilege. It's as simple as that.

[identity profile] no-one-specific.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Just stepping in to say that recently, because of all the SJ bs that I've been seeing online and stuff, I consider privilege to have a negative connotation.

but think of it as a pure antonym to "unprivileged"
However, I definitely agree with that, if it's used in that sense. More often than not it isn't, though, from what I've seen--I've seen it used to attack people and to try to make people feel guilty and to dismiss them from arguments because 'they're privileged so they don't know what they're talking about'

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
As have I, but that is a case of the concept being used to bully. If a hammer is used to murder someone, that does not make hammers any less useful! The concept has been a great deal of use to lots of people, especially people who have to overcome other difficulties in life. Please do not dismiss the whole idea because of the nasty actions of a few proponents. :)

[identity profile] no-one-specific.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Still, it carries a negative connotation. I definitely see what you mean, but I still have to say that more often than not, because of the way it's been used, calling someone privileged can be taken offensively.

(All IMHO, obviously...)

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Just as "lucky" can carry a negative connotation, or it can be a simple factual description. You're an intelligent human being; you don't need to reject a word because it's nuanced, for crying out loud.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem in this specific forum lies not in the word itself, or even its use in general; you've raised some very good points, but in this comm, it's almost always used as a guilt hammer to try and shut people up :/

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
so basically you've been told to shut up

and now, you're mad about it

[identity profile] no-one-specific.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Good, you can read!

(Anonymous) 2011-03-31 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, not unless you've been brainwashed by the SJ crowd.

I may be better off in some respects and worse off in others than the next person. That doesn't make me privileged, while it may make make "luckier" than the other person in one particular respect.

Otherwise, we could say the disabled person about whom this secret is made, is privileged while the OP is not - in the happiness arena, for example.

[identity profile] anivad.livejournal.com 2011-04-01 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know anyone in the SJ crowd who denies the existence of intersectionality.

Every person has some privileges and doesn't have others. Not having privileges in some areas doesn't erase having privileges in other areas.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"I know it exists but it's not my 'privilege'. I was born this way, I can't help that."

Well, yes you can. And as long as you have that choice, you're privileged, and should be aware of it.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
What are you talking about? What choice? Does a white person have the choice to get rid of their white privilege? Or a straight person to dismiss their straight privilege, and whatever other kind of privilege there is out there. Yes, one should be aware of their privilege, but one doesn't choose to have privilege.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but an able bodied person can choose not to be.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, in the same way that a person of color can choose to be white.
Don't be stupid.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, do you really see no difference between "turning black" and breaking your body? One is possible, the other isn't. But for some straange, strange reason, anon chooses not to break their legs or crack their head on a wall. Why could that be? Maybe because having your legs broken isn't a good thing?

(Anonymous) 2011-03-31 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
No, I disagree. In fact, I'm going to go take a mallet to my knees.

Jesus Christ man, no fucking shit.

[identity profile] frenchonionchef.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes. Because choosing not to throw yourself down the stairs or take a mallet to your own knees is exercising 'privilege'.

What is it with these people? I can't even.

[identity profile] fairhearing.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
And it's just a tiny step to ABUSING privilege by not taking that mallet to your knees!

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Look, if you want to break your legs, give me a call. It's been a rough week, I could use some stress relief.

*disclaimer: the above comment is facetious.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-03-30 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm very nearsighted, and I would like to not have to rely on my contacts to be able to see. But I don't think of my non-nearsighted friends as having "good vision privilege." Granted they have that advantage over me, and don't know what it's like to be half blind without corrective lenses, but I wouldn't tell them to poke themselves in the eye so they could know what it was like for me, nor should they feel guilty about not doing so. Just because something's possible doesn't mean you should do it, especially if it isn't a good thing, and no one should be guilted for being healthy just because there are people in the world who aren't.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-30 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Agree. Thank you. :)

[identity profile] tee-sama.livejournal.com 2011-03-31 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. We should be able to be good people and feel good about ourselves without having to laugh and point and shame other people.

That's an Utopia though.
